On this steamy Sunday, steamy, sweaty Sunday. All right, let's go. You might be wondering why I'm wearing this African-looking hiking shirt. Because on Wednesday, I looked at the weather report, and I then Googled, find me a hiking shirt if I were to go to Africa. And this is the one I found. So, because I feel like I'm in Botswana right now on the tropics.

I am Dr. Livingston, getting ready to preach at the Fount of the Nile. So, with all that said, if you have your Bibles, open up to Ephesians 1, 15-23. You might be saying to yourself recently, man, they're kind of upping their game a little bit here at La Jolla Christian Fellowship. They're asking more of me. And that's actually true. The next five weeks, you're in week two of this now, I've really been convicted of the Lord as we've grown.

It's really easy as a pastor to be like, wow, that's amazing. Go to sleep at night. More people show up. I mean, Disneyland is full of people. It doesn't mean they're doing anything for God. And I know that there's angels that go back and forth in churches, as we see in Revelations, that report to the throne of God what's happening at a church. And when I stand before the Lord one day, I want to say, or I want the Lord to say of us, that we were a church that really was engaged in bringing the kingdom of God.

It is exciting to see the growth and everything. But what I'm hoping, even if we were to lose some people for upping that ante, is that people who come here want to be part of a kingdom-based church that disciples, that prays, that serves, that gives, that changes their community. And it's a different type of Christianity than a consumer Christianity.

So if you notice over the next few weeks, and I'm going to do it forever over and over again, but for the next few weeks we're doing a health checkup. And I would encourage you, please go online. It's anonymous. And just tell us if you're in and how you're in and how you want to be. There's five questions there. And then we can get a sense, okay, where are we really moving?

Prayer is so important. This message is the second part. We did G last week giving. This week is prayer. And prayer is essential. Prayer will change your life. And this week I was getting messages left and right from people in our congregation that were going through some really difficult things. And it was one after another after another. In my own life a couple things happened.

And I was just like, Lord, what is going on? I'm being tempted to be off kilter. I'm being tempted to be concerned, to worry. Why is so much attack? And last night I was laying in bed and I was praying about these things that were happening. I have one friend who was in a bicycle accident this week, not wearing a helmet, smart like me, not wearing a helmet, going probably 50 miles an hour down the road.

Next thing he wakes up and he's in an ambulance. And so he'd been there I think 30 minutes on the road until somebody found him, somebody in our church. Surprisingly, his backpack came up and put itself between his head and the pavement and he walked away with injuries to his ribs and things like that. But it could have been a heck of a lot worse.

And I was asking the Lord, what is going on? And the Lord said to me, I said specifically last night before I went to sleep, he said I'm showing you the power of a praying church. Because in every one of these situations, every single person got through it. Every single person, God came, God provided. And I want to say this, as a church, we want to be a praying church.

We want to be a church that understands that when you pray little, you get little results. That when you don't pray, you have less protection. You have less of God's kingdom in your life. You have less peace. But when you do pray, you have a life and a church that has more of God's protection, more of God's favor, more of God's presence in your life.

And that's why God created prayer. So here Paul is speaking to the Ephesians church. And I definitely, at the end of this message, I am praying that you will be inspired to take the territory of prayer back on your calendar. to mark some spaces on your calendar that say, this is non-negotiable time for me with God, so that it will affect your life.

Because we want a church full of believers that are filled with the Spirit and touch. And you guys want that as well. Amen? Amen. Key word today is prayer. Circle the word prayer. I think it's on there. Billy Graham has a definition. You can write this in the definition. He says, simply, a conversation between you and God. That's it. He says, prayer is simple.

It's basic. New Testament says that no one knows how to pray. So when you decide that I'm so overwhelmed because I don't know how to pray and I feel guilty, don't worry about it. The Bible says no one knows how to pray, even Billy Graham. The Bible says no one knows how to pray. But God will be led through the Holy Spirit. We'll have to depend on here.

He says it's simply a conversation between you and God. That conversation can happen at five in the morning, in a quiet time with a candle lit in a chair. It can happen as you're driving. It can happen when someone is yelling at you in a soccer game or a pickleball match like so many of you are a part of. You can just give a quick prayer to God, help my emotions.

Whatever it is, it is conversating with God. It is communicating sometimes with words, sometimes with emotions, sometimes with thoughts, sometimes with the written word. It is communicating to God what's in your heart. And it is then sitting and waiting upon God and being aware when he speaks back to you. He will speak back to you like he speaks back to me on occasion with a thought.

He will give you a scripture. And in that scripture, you'll say, that's just the answer that I was asking for. You will see a movie. And there will be a scene in the movie that will remind you of something that you had prayed for. Something will come in the mail. A neighbor will say something. A door will be opened. This is what prayer does as we speak to God in prayer.

And Paul is talking about such a high level of prayer and concern here. He says this in verse 15. For this reason, because I have heard of your faith, in whom the Lord Jesus, and your love towards all the saints. I love that. I do not cease, circle cease, we'll get back to that, to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. God doesn't need prayer, right?

Prayer was created because God loves you. God knows everything you need. He doesn't need help. He doesn't need your prayers to build a stairway to heaven so he can finally get the message and then give you some resources. God can do all this without prayer. So why did he create prayer? God created prayer for relationship because he wants to be involved in your life.

That's it. It is a language. Imagine life without language. It is the language of heaven. It is the lingua franca of the spiritual realm. It is the common language of God that he wants to speak to you, to communicate to you, and to have you be aware of this. Here's the problem, though, with so much prayer. Because prayer is this incredible eternity.

I sometimes have said that prayer, we're satisfied with a little 500 square foot studio because we have a house. If prayer was a house, we're happy with that, but God's like, hey, I want to take you to Montana. I got a 10,000 acre ranch that I want to show you, and there is an expanse here, and there's a lot more that you can learn. But too often, the lion's share of our believer's prayer center around safety and stuff, right?

There's nothing wrong with that. God wants you to cry out to him when you're hurting, when you feel that there's something going wrong, you're terrified, or you're whatever it is, or for someone else, or you're praying for what's happening in the world. It is so often just about safety or stuff. And when you bring those things to God, he's going to receive it every single time.

He's never going to guilt you. He's never going to say, hey, stop bringing that to me. Do you do that with your children? We just saw beautiful children up here. You're never going to do that. But eventually, your children start having more adult conversations, right? Eventually, your children start to speak about the nuances of life. And as a parent, it's awesome to see your children really grow, right, and to have those conversations.

And what I want to do today, and looking at Paul's scripture here, is to help set you on a course to move away from something that is new and in the beginning stages to something that is maturing. This is what Paul says here, and we're going to drop into a few things. But I want to dissect this prayer. If you look at your notes, dissecting Paul's prayer here.

We're just going to dissect it quickly, and it's going to give you some really basic, really practical tools. One, the dominant intention of Paul's prayer for the church is that they become more and more grounded in a knowledge of who God is. As you read through this, you will see that every time he asked for something, that something would be given.

He asked that it would be given in the knowledge of God. He asked that through Jesus Christ. What he is saying, and what I think I said earlier, is prayer is about relationship. And when you pray, it is not about a spiritual to-do list. And we oftentimes do have spiritual to-do lists. I wrote a whole book on asking prayer where I encourage people to get 100 prayer requests and keep track of those requests.

And that's a section and an angle of prayer that we want to know about. But it's a far less important, I think, trajectory that God would rather take you on, is that you would know him. As Paul is saying, I'm praying for you, the number one thing he's praying about is you're being equipped. He's talking about equipping. He's talking about knowing.

He's talking about having wisdom, all the things that we want. It is all based in knowing who God is. And so as you pray, let me say this, you're going to get to know who God is. As you pray, you're going to know him more. You're going to understand him more because you're going to be speaking to him more. I put God created prayer for the purpose of relationship, not a spiritual to-do list.

There's nothing wrong with a to-do list, right? You've got a million things. You want to end the war in Ukraine, right? You want to do all these other things. You want your kids to get transferred out of one teacher's class and into another. You need a raise at work. Your brother's mad at you. I don't know. You want the Chargers to win finally. I don't know.

Whatever it is. You know what? They're dead to me anyway, so I have nothing about the Chargers. I don't pray for the Chargers anymore. I wasted so much time on praying for the Chargers. God never answered that prayer. He said, nay. Here's four, here's some things. We're going to look at three things that are elements of Paul's prayer that I want you to be able to onboard.

Very practical. And if you want to grow in your prayer life, these are the ones. The first one is being unceasing. The second is equipping. And the third is knowing. Let's go to verse 16. We'll jump right into it. Verse 16. I do not cease, circle cease, to give thanks for you. I love that. Constantly everything's being enshrouded, encloaked in thanksgiving.

It is with a gratitude. Prayer happens with gratitude that you can even speak to God. Remembering you in my what? In my prayers. In 1 Thessalonians 15 through 18, it says rejoice always. Pray without what? Ceasing. That is a really interesting word. Ceasing, obviously, means to stop. And what I think Paul was saying is more than you are constantly praying.

So in the back of your head, you know, you've got this running dialogue that never stops. I'm not sure Paul was talking about a perfect timeline of prayer. I think what Paul is trying to get at is prayer is your go-to. Prayer is your plan A. Prayer is the first trigger that you will go to when you are triggered. My mom has a saying, and she wrote it on a sticker, and she gave it to me about 15 years ago, and it said prayer is always the answer.

I love that. That's a person who's grounded in prayer. And so I took that sticker, and I put it above on the side of the wall by my bed, and I remember prayer is always the answer. When we are unceasing people, we are relentless. I love the word relentless. My two favorite basketball players of all time, right, were relentless. The first is Dennis Rodman.

I know, separate all of his stuff, but if you ever watch that man rebound, that man was relentless. Just that, he owned that ball. My second favorite player, first, actually my first favorite player, I don't know, they go back and forth, it's Kobe, right? If you ever watch that guy, that guy, they call it the what, the mamba mentality, right? He was just relentless, always thinking, always moving.

I don't know if you know this about Kobe. He actually grew up in Italy, was a Catholic, and returned to the faith in a very strong way. The day he actually died, he went to mass with his daughter, took communion, got on the helicopter and passed away. But there was a relentless nature. We're relentless about a lot of things. Most of us have something in our lives that we are relentless about, something that we're constantly going after.

What Paul is saying is he wants prayer, you to become relentless, going after it over and over again. Every time there's a situation, you throw up a prayer. It doesn't mean you have to be St. Augustine. It doesn't mean you have to be Francis of Assisi, or Billy Graham, or whoever it is. It just means that you go to prayer, humbly with gratitude, saying, God, I need you.

My favorite prayer is a four-letter prayer, and it is this, help. That is a great prayer. If you regularly say to God, here's my situation, help, he will show up. In James, it says if you ask for wisdom, it says that he is like a good father. He is generous. He will give when you need that wisdom. And so we want to be relentless. There's a story in Luke 18, 1-8, about this persistent widow.

And she has this need, and she keeps coming to a ruler, a governor in the land, in the Gospel of Luke. And over and over again, he's like, go away, go away, go away. And eventually, he gets so tired of her showing up that he's all, I'm going to grant her request because she is so persistent. And Jesus tells that story, right? I wonder, I wonder how many things God wanted to partner with us that were just one prayer away from being accomplished.

Granted, could God do it on his own? Yes. He doesn't need prayers. But if you look at the Scripture, what you will see often is that God is wanting a partnership to a certain amount sometimes. He says to his disciples at one point, these demons, they're not coming out unless you have prayer and fasting. Now, does God need prayer and fasting to throw some demons out on the street?

No. But God wants to partner with them for the purpose of collaboration because he loves us. And I wonder sometimes how a city can, how many prayers away is a city? How many hearts turning totally to God is a city from turning to a city that goes after God where you see a revival in a place and you've read the stories of revival? So the first thing is unceasing.

I'll ask you this. How unceasing, how relentless are you in prayer? What is your go-to? We have go-tos, right? When things go down in our life, we have go-tos. We can go to a friend. We can go to a bottle. We can go to something that releases the tension. What God is saying is I want you to be relentless and pray and pray and pray. That's the first one, the unceasing nature, what that Paul is saying.

Go to verse 17, the equipping. Verse 17 says this, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the spirit, circle spirit, of wisdom and revelation in your knowledge of him. Now once again I said, when God is giving things, do you see how it's wrapped in him? I think so many of us in our lives, we often want to know the whys and the ways of our lives separate from knowing him.

God, tell me this. Tell me why this has happened. How come you were asking all these questions of God and we're like, hey, even if I don't know more about who you are, as long as I get to the answer to this question I have in my life, then I'm good. He's not going to separate that. Do you see, he is giving a spirit. Now we're going to talk about that in a second.

He is giving a spirit of wisdom. Go to verse 17 again. God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, it puts him in a father nature, may give, so you're getting something. Last week our word was give. Give you the spirit of what? Of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him. Which means you are not going to get the spirit of wisdom, of revelation outside of him.

He says, you have to know me first and when you know me, then you will get the answer to what you're looking for. Because I am the source. Like I said with Dr. Livingston, who was searching for the fount, the beginning of the Nile in Africa and through his travel, spent his whole life doing this. God is saying, I am the fount of all wisdom. I am the fount of all knowledge.

Seek ye first the kingdom of God and all this stuff will be added unto you. I want to stop right there and look at the spirit. Now imagine it says the spirit of wisdom. What does that mean? That's an interesting verse for a New Testament. It's like, so there's like a little spirit, like Casper the Friendly Ghost, that's like running around and he gives it to me and now I have wisdom.

No, that's not what he's talking about. The spirit is the same spirit referred to in Proverbs chapter 8. Now if you are reading through the scripture right now of, through the entire Bible in a year and you're reading, or you're reading the Proverbs every day according to the day, so today's the 8th. Today I opened up and I read Proverbs 8 and what is it about?

It's about the spirit of God being the wisdom of God. And it's all about revelation and that spirit is the Holy Spirit. It is mentioned. And so what God is saying is when you pray, I am going to release to you not just answers. What is it? What's good? What's good with it? You get an answer. It's good for a while. Then you need another answer. You need another answer.

Would you rather have the answers you need when you need it? Or would you rather pray that God release the Holy Spirit, the spirit of revelation which lives within us, to reveal to you the deep knowledge of God, the mind of God, so that you will have wisdom and knowledge in every situation as we know him. You see, when you just show up to prayer, and that's all God's asking is that you show up.

You just show up. You begin to say, I want to know you more. And that's a great thing to say to God sometimes. Hey, God, I really want to know this. I really want this answer. I want to know you more. That is a mature prayer. That is a prayer that says, I trust you with your sovereignty of everything you have going on in my life, but I want to know you more, even if you don't give me an answer.

Job says, in the book of Job, we're starting a series on Job in a few weeks. When we get to that, in one part of that, he says, even though God slay me, I will keep hoping in him. Because Job cared more about knowing who God was than getting his answers. And so that's what it says, that he gives you a spirit of wisdom and revelation. So that's equipping, right?

The first thing was unceasing. We're being unceasing. You're just showing up. You're making a time in your life in the terra firma of your calendar that says, this is a time where it is, I will not compromise with that time. And the next is the equipping. We see that he's equipping you with the spirit. Let's go to the final one. Verse 18. Knowing. Having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you.

What are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints. And what is the immeasurable greatness of his power towards us who believe according to the working of his great might. Now that's a mouthful, right? Look how Paul prays. He's not just saying, hey, and he does pray like this, hey, I need you to get something over to Timothy in Ephesus.

Hey, God, can you open up a way? He's not just praying a list. He's praying for some deep knowledge of who God is. Now imagine if you got these things. And I would say, highlight this prayer and pray it for yourself as often as you can. Say, God, do this in my life. Let me just say it one more time because this is a knowing. He says, having the eyes of your heart enlightened, that you may know what is the hope.

That means you're steeped in hope. To which he has called you. What are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints. And in the immeasurable greatness of his power towards us who believe according to the working of his great might. In the biblical language, the heart often represents the center of one's being, encompassing their mind and all their emotions.

So when the Bible says the heart, they're talking about your entire being. They're talking about your heart, your mind, your soul, your strength, everything. It is an entirety. It's interesting now. There's a secular form of prayer called mindfulness that you'll see on Instagram. You'll see it at your yoga class. You'll see it all over. It's this mindfulness, right?

And when you look at the scripture, the scripture says we have the mind of Christ. So the only mindfulness we are called to have is Christ's mind. When the Bible talks about the center of your being, the place that you want to think from, the very place that you are saved from. Remember, it isn't if you confess with your mouth and believe in your mind that Jesus Christ is Lord, you will be saved.

It says if you confess with your mouth and believe where? In your heart that Jesus Christ is Lord, you will be saved. Because the center is not mindfulness, it's heartfulness. And the Bible is saying that God wants to enlighten, he wants to enlighten the eyes of your heart, the eyes of your entire being that you might see, all those things. That word there that Paul was speaking about, enlightened, is fotizo.

It's a really fun word to say. Fotizo, right? That word enlightened. And he's talking not about a physical sight, but a spiritual perception. Fotizo is this, to cause something to exist. And thus come to light and become clear to all. One could argue the Greek word is saying that until the eyes of your heart are enlightened to a situation or to God's glorious nature, that it doesn't exist to you.

Now granted, if you're running through a dark forest and just because you can't see the tree doesn't mean the tree doesn't exist, right? The tree exists and when you run into it, it will exist. But when it comes to the eyes of your heart and the knowledge of God, it does not exist to you. And if you are in the dark, you cannot see it. And he says that when the eyes of your heart are enlightened, these things will come into existence.

They will appear like something through the mist. As the sun begins to come out, they will appear. All of a sudden, remember he prayed here for hope? You have no hope perhaps, but it will begin to exist. You have no knowledge, but you will start to understand. You have no way in the darkness, but you will begin to see a path because prayer does these things as he begins to do it and begins to enlighten us.

Here's the practical takeaways that I want and we're going to close with this. Very simple practical takeaways. First one is this. Take back your calendar and claim daily and non-negotiable times with God. Daily and non-negotiable. There are a few things in our life that are pretty much non-negotiable. My wife and I's date night. We've been doing it since before we were married.

It probably takes a birthday party or something like that, a family. I don't know. We might switch it, but we'll probably switch it. Me showing up to my kids' stuff, non-negotiable. I will cancel everything I can to show up to my kids' stuff. I just went to my final back-to-school night. I have one senior left. I was happy to say goodbye to them.

It was great. I've done about 25 of those. But those things are non-negotiable. I just got to ask you, how negotiable is your prayer time? Do you have a prayer time? Here's my challenge. This is a prescription. I have a friend who's a pastor, and I went and talked to him one day, and he had a prescription thing on his desk. And after I was done, I went for some counseling.

He goes, let me give you a prescription. I was like, what? He goes, yeah, my doctor gave me a prescription. So I started writing prescriptions for people. So he goes, you know, here's a book I want you to read, and then pray for this, and read this chapter in the Bible. And he handed it to me. I'm like, that's a great idea. I need a prescription thing that I can hand out.

And so the prescription is this, 22 minutes a day where you take time in your calendar and you spend 22 minutes a day with God. You just say, 22 minutes, I am going to sit with God. And I want to tell you, for the next three weeks, so for 21 days, until you're back here again, when we're back on the next, we're going to do prayer again in three weeks, for the next 21 days, you spend 22 minutes with God.

You don't have to do anything in that time. I just want you to show up. I'm not asking you to, you know, end the conflict in the Middle East. I'm not asking you to save the world, to pray 12,000 prayers. Just show up with God. Start talking or listening. Just sit there. Don't have your phone. If your mind goes away from God, bring it back slowly. This is just an exercise to reclaim the time.

You've got to get back into the thing that I am going to be with God. I'm going to show up every single day. It's not reading your Bible. That's a different thing. It is 22 minutes a day. That's two and a half hours a week. If you go to the gym two and a half hours a week, it's going to change your life. If you spend two and a half hours, and that will add up quick, 22 minutes.

Just set your clock. Boom. It'll change your life. Now, the next thing, I want to give you a practical tool. If you're like, Adam, but I want to do something prayer. This is just something I do. Super practical. Super easy. I want to make faith super easy. I have these beads at home that I pray through. But because I couldn't find them, because I'm like that, I got some popcorn, and I got some pistachios.

The pistachios have the shells on them. If you have 50 pieces of popcorn and 10 pistachios, I do this. And then I sit there and I pray. I pull one piece out, and I hold a piece of popcorn in my hand. I say, Jesus, I'm just going to pray for my daughter. Pray you bless her in school, that you would just love her and care for her, that you would just open up the eyes of her heart.

I do it again. God, I just pray for my wife, and I just go. Sometimes I'm just cooking. You know what I'm saying? I'm just working. I'm just making it happen, right? When I get to a pistachio, Lord's Prayer. What? What just happened there? So I pray the Lord's Prayer. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, right? I stole it from the Catholics.

I get it. Okay. All good. I got you. I got you, right? But the rosary spooks some Protestants, so I didn't bring it. Boom. Just do that. You can go buy really nice beads, but don't wait for the beads. Get yourself some popcorn. Get yourself some beans. Do whatever you want. But sit there until the thing's empty. You can put in 50 and 50 and just go for it.

That is such a practical tool to just sit there, because here's what we want to do. We want to pray in church. We want a church that knows who Jesus is. And what we want to do is help you reclaim that conversation with God to make it a priority, to make it something that you are relentless in, that you are knowing him, and you're going to see your life expand.

You're going to see protection like you've never seen. You're going to see presence like you've never seen. You're going to see God's power like you've never seen. Amen? Amen. Stand if you would. I'm going to invite our prayer team forward. Prayer team wants to pray for you. If you need prayer, come forward. We want to pray for healing for you. We want to pray for situations.

We have a crack prayer team. They're like a seal team of prayer. They will pray for you. If you don't know Jesus, or if you want to recommit your life to Jesus, they will pray for you to know Jesus. Come forward and say, I need to know Jesus in my heart. We will pray for you. We will get you discipled. We will get you baptized and following Jesus, and watch that happen in your life.

Final thing before I bless you, if you are not part of a small group or you want to be discipled, just want to go out to the fair afterwards, get yourself a hot dog, and see what's going on. We want to see you involved. If you extend your hands, I want to bless you today. Lord Jesus, I want to pray, God, that you would bless your people, God, that you would meet them in prayer, that you would just make it non-negotiable, that they can just discover time with you again, to move beyond mindfulness, God, to a knowledge of Jesus Christ, of who he is, Lord Jesus.

God, we'd ask that you would just bless them from the top of their head to the bottom of their feet, God, in all ways that they would acknowledge him. And we thank you for this church and what you're doing with it. In the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit, amen. Have a great weekend. Thanks for coming on such a hot day. We love you.
