So we had a great time We got to connect And we had a really good time And then I also run A men's prayer group On Thursdays If any men are available From 12 to 1 on Thursdays Love to have you Today's scripture reading Is from Nehemiah 2, 1 through 6 In the month of Nisan In the 20th year Of King Artaxerxes When wine was brought for him I took the wine And gave it to the king I had not been sad In his presence before So the king asked me Why does your face look so sad When you are not ill?

This can be nothing But sadness of heart I was very much afraid But I had said to the king May the king live forever Why should my face Not look sad When the city Where my ancestors Are buried lies in ruins And its gates Have been destroyed by fire The king said to me What is it you want? Then I prayed to the God of heaven And I answered the king If it pleases the king And if your servant Has found favor in his sight Let him send me To the city in Judah Where my ancestors Are buried So that I can rebuild it Then the king With the queen Sitting beside him Asked me How long will your journey take?

And when will you get back? It pleased the king to send me So I set a time The word of the Lord Oh, where do we begin? The rubble or our sins? Oh, where do we begin? The rubble or our sins? And the wolves kept tumbling down In the city that we love The rubble or our sins? Right on, if you have your Bibles Open up with us to Nehemiah chapter 2 We are in the second week Of an eight-week series On Nehemiah Where he is a servant of God That is called to rebuild The walls around Jerusalem Big job And he does it in 52 days And part of this journey We are inviting you To survey the walls of your life The gates of your life Remember in Jerusalem There were seven gates And not only had the gate The walls been torn down But the gates had been burned And so we have these different gates That are things We have an eye gate We have an ear gate The things that come in And out of our mouth And what we say These are different gates That sometimes in order to rebuild We need to take a look at those And decide if we need God To rebuild those To bring security and a stronghold Now, one of the things I mentioned last week Is in the 52 days that he did this We started ours on Rosh Hashanah Which was on Tuesday But the new year began on Sunday Of last week And we are in the seventh day Of this 52-day journey To rebuild these walls And the book of Nehemiah Was actually one book It was actually Ezra and Nehemiah Spoke about that last week And it was broken into two books And it has three main characters First main character is Zerubbabel It's a fun word to say Zerubbabel And it means the offspring of Babylon As you know, Israel was taken into captivity By the Babylonians And after 70 years Zerubbabel leads a group of former Israelites Or the descendants of the Israelites Back to Jerusalem To rebuild the nation But he doesn't start with rebuilding the wall Which is so interesting, right?

Usually, where do we begin? The song just said that, right? Where do we begin? The rubble Or our sin? It's a great question from Bastille As he wrote that song Called Pompeii And it's the same question And the answer from God The question from God And the answer was We begin with the temple And so when Zerubbabel came back He rebuilt the temple first Now, we would usually start with the rubble, right?

We've got to get our security together And then we can deal with the heart issues And whatever We've got to make sure we're safe God doesn't do that God says, I'm going to send you back Let's rebuild the temple After the temple is rebuilt About 70 years later Ezra comes Ezra reteaches the Torah They had forgotten the Torah They had forgotten the Word of God The Word of God is a protection, right?

The Word of God is a lamp unto your feet And God often says Look, you take care of the temple You follow my word I got this security bit on my own I will cover you and protect you But because those things are important And strongholds are important He eventually sends Nehemiah That's where we are today Nehemiah comes to rebuild the wall And if you can remember Nehemiah is a slave Who has been human trafficked That's some issues of today That we understand Has been human trafficked To the kingdom of Babylon In order to be the cupbearer to the king He's cupbearer to the king And as the cupbearer He drinks the king's wine Before the king does Because of perhaps there's poison in it Or something like that And so we see that he is standing before the king And there's a moment that God has called him to And he seizes the moment It says, there's a couple things If you look in your notes There's three things that I want to talk about The backdrop before we jump into this The book of Nehemiah is set against a backdrop Of judgment and prophetic timing This is really important One, why is Israel in Babylon?

Is God just mean? Is God a buzz kill? You know, they're doing all these fun things Having all these pagan festivals And he's like, ah, we can't do Burning Man anymore Out in the wilderness We're over that And so, does he just want to kill all the fun? Or is God doing something for a reason? We oftentimes don't understand That God uses us hitting our rock bottom In order to save us, right?

Some of us will look back at our rock bottom And we say that that was the rock bottom That thank God for that rock bottom And it didn't kill me Because what doesn't kill you You know, makes you stronger And God used that as grace And so God uses punishment, tribulation Why? As mercy To bring you back to God And so if you've had a rock bottom Hopefully, in that rock bottom It was your last Some people, they just haven't hit their bottom yet Israel hadn't hit their bottom And so one of the things you'll see God had judged Judah for its idolatry And its rebellion Before we talk about the prophetic timing Because this is really a message of timing Timing for your life Timing for the things that God wants to do Timing for the doors God wants to open in your life Understanding the timing of the doors That God will never open in your life Because he says that's not healthy for you I don't want that for you And other doors, he's like Hey, this door's already open I need you to come through Living in God's timing I want to talk about why Israel is where they were There was five big sins that Israel had done For hundreds of years You're talking hundreds of years Of sinning against God And God being patient And God being patient You'll see a quote there by Thomas Jefferson He says, I tremble for my country When I reflect that God is just And that his justice cannot sleep forever A lot of people lean into God's love But in order for love to exist It has to have judgment It has to know what is not love It has to know when love has been breached And it also needs to have justice And God is a God of justice And so there's five big sins And if you've ever been to Africa They have, you know, the big five they call If you're a hunter I think it's the water buffalo I think it's the lion I don't know if it's the giraffe Is that in the big five?

I don't know Rhino, hippopotamus I'm not a big game hunter As you can tell Although I am wearing pumpkin spice today Did anybody know that? Fall is among us So Israel had five big sins And those sins were this The first one was idolatry I told you when I was in Israel on a tour They said that when the old city was excavated That they did not find one house That did not have an idol in it This is what the tour guy told me So that one house that didn't have an idol Where they had left their God And begun to worship idols Other things in their life That was the first one Next one that they had Was an unbridled sexuality A limitless sexuality That had no limiting principles And so they were beginning to do things Within the area of sexuality Which is very important to God And in a way that offended God One of the things you will know About any religious practice that you follow It has limiting principles And so one of the things you'll see Especially with biblical human sexuality Is it has limiting principles There's just a certain point Where you hit a limiting principle And it's like anything beyond this Is not something that God desires Or what is best for humanity And so they were living in an area Where in a time Where they had shunned All those limiting principles Next one was witchcraft A ton of witchcraft So you had witchcraft In all the different areas And I don't know if you've been To the bookstore lately I want to challenge you If you go to a bookstore Go to the witchcraft area Now there's a witchcraft area That you'll find There's one up in Miramar Where I go to that Miramesa Where I go to the bookstore up there There's a huge interest And there was a fascination in Israel With witchcraft And that witchcraft became the fuel Witchcraft oftentimes is the fuel For the sin that goes around it So you had that And there's two others That they had It was murder and pride They worshipped pride Pride was something That they just Whatever they wanted They would have Now the cool thing As we get to Is understanding That part of this prophetic timing That while God did allow them 70 years in captivity He capped He capped the punishment It wasn't just We're just going to keep going forever There was a timing issue And this is to remind you I think this is why This passage is so important To remind us that God has timing The book of Nehemiah Is tied to the prophets It's tied to the book of Daniel You'll see in your notes The angel Gabriel had said Daniel 9 24-27 That the prophetic clock Would start ticking That at the time The decree was issued To rebuild Jerusalem So when that decree was issued When he was sent out That moment God started timing I think it also reminds us of this Is that God has a timetable God has a timetable For your life He has a time Where he wants to open doors There is a time Where he wants doors That are closed And one of the issues That we have Is that we just don't want To do things That oftentimes According to God's timetable It says in Isaiah 46-10 That God knows He has a beginning And he has an end To everything And so I don't know I was talking in the first service About how we get sometimes When the door doesn't get opened We go to this door And we begin to bang on this door That we want to open And it's for a career Or it's for something That you want relationally Or it's for a wife Or for a husband Or for children And all these things Can be good things But we go there And we start banging on the door And I mentioned that We sometimes will throw a tante I don't know if you've heard The term tante When I lived in Australia They called it tante It's tantrum Okay And adults throw them as well It just looks a little bit different But I don't know If you've ever had a child I remember both Lily and Lucy When they were children Had this ability That when they would start crying And then there would be a moment Where they would just go like this And there would be like 25 seconds of silence No breathing Purple Turning purple You knew That when the dam was breached Right That all hell and heaven Was going to break loose And they would just have this Ah You know My kids weren't really tantrumers You know what I mean Throw things or whatever We didn't allow a lot of that But do we not do that sometimes With our timing I want to encourage you That God has timing He knows where you are He knows what chapter you're in He knows where you are He knows who the main characters Of your story are And he wants you To be in the right chapter with him He doesn't want you reading ahead He's not into spoiler alerts Prophecy is a little bit of a spoiler alert But nonetheless He wants you to know And to be comfortable in the timing But see sometimes with the timing There's also opportunities And we see with Nehemiah here And we'll see in just a second Nehemiah is in a really bad position He's drinking possible poison every day He's a slave He doesn't have much of a future But God has put him in front of a king And God has put him in a place Where he has an opportunity And there's also an opportunity cost There's an opportunity cost And when that opportunity comes He strikes Nehemiah strikes And he's not afraid to strike And he's not afraid to ask big So here's the two things We're going to look at today In regard to having tools For a reconstruction And in regard to you Asking yourself Are you an agent of reconstruction?

Do you believe that There's some of the same characteristics That were the big five for Israel That we see in our nation today And that at a certain time Like Thomas Jefferson says At a certain point God will say enough's enough And as part of that Do you want to be Part of the reconstruction? Now whether you believe In the prophetic timing Or in that Do you see what is happening around us?

And you say Well I might not believe In all the prophetic timing And where we are as a nation But I do see That there's an issue With people's emotional health Their mental health There's a suicide crisis I want to step into that And I want to be like Jerubbabel And I want to be a person Who brings people To the city of God I want to be a person Who brings people Out of that place All of us are leading Someone somewhere If Unless you're a monk On an island Out by yourself You are leading Someone somewhere We're either leading people To Babel Or we're leading people To the city of God And do we want To be those people Those people who lead Who make a difference Who are kingdom bringers And so there's two main keys For this era This idea of being Part of the reconstruction First is this Nehemiah acted With courageous abandon Courageous abandon We're going to talk about What does it mean To have courage And then second Nehemiah asked With unbridled Godly desire Not desire of his own With unbridled Godly desire Let's look at the first one Go to verse three Nehemiah acted With a courageous abandon Verse three But I said to the king May the king live forever Why should my face Not look sad When the city Where my ancestors Are buried Lies in ruins And its gates Have been destroyed By fire I'm going to circle Something really Pivotal To that verse But I said to the king You have nothing To say to the king You are a Maybe may the king Live forever Because we all Want to be told Something like that So maybe Maybe you just He praises upon the king But when it comes To the request That he's asking He has nothing To say to the king And he puts himself At great peril He puts himself At great risk But he's willing To ask the question Now he enshrouds that As we'll see in prayer In a moment He has some ideas He has fear And all these things That are going on But in that moment He asked He asked of the king And he was basically saying Can you allow me To go back And recreate a nation That might usurp you Let me just explain it Once again That the nation That he was going back to Was well known There was still fear Amongst all the other nations That still talked And said things like Remember when the Egyptians Went through the sea The Red Sea And God fought for them And they were terrified David was there Solomon The Solomonic kingdom Was one of the biggest Kingdoms ever It ruled all over Through Babylon They were subject To the Solomonic kingdom And now Nehemiah Is saying to the king Okay He's saying to the king Hey by the way You remember that nation That used to subject you You remember that nation That was That God had Was being so powerful I was just wondering If I could go back And kind of Reestablish it And rebuild the walls Now when you ask To rebuild the walls That's a big deal You're asking for A secure location You don't create strongholds Unless you're making it A stronghold against something It was a big ask And he asked in that moment And he's bold in that moment I love courage I love courage Courage is the value Upon which all other values ride You need to have the courage To have faith The courage to love Every value rides upon courage And when I think about courage I was thinking this week As I was studying courage Joan of Arc came up Joan of Arc is an incredible figure It was interesting In 1428 she was 17 years old And she began to have These visions and dreams And God began to speak to her And God told her To do an act That is very much like Nehemiah It's actually exactly like him God told her to go speak To the king To Charles Hadn't been coronated yet To go speak to Charles And say I want to be part Of the rebellion Against the British Who are attacking France And I want to help Lead the charge And go to the city That is being besieged I feel like I'm supposed To take the banner Of the French Go into the city And be there And rally the troops 17 year old 17 year old woman Hearing from God Charles is so impacted By her Not only her courage But her purity I love that When I read that Not only her courage But her purity I want to say Courage and purity Can win nations Courage is one thing Without purity Purity is strong And purity will go a long way But purity with courage Those two things And because of it He sends a 17 year old girl Girl In there And within nine days The British troops surrender She ends up Marching on Having a few more Victories in battle And they believe That the hundred years war Ended because of What was started With her It's incredible You know what the thing is She had the courage To ask Let me ask you When was the last time You asked And had the courage To ask Maybe there's the courage To go to your boss And say Hey I was wondering If I could start A bible study In the conference room On Tuesdays at noon Or maybe there's a friend And you've been talking To him And have the courage To say Hey I was meaning To ask you Have you ever Thought about Faith in Jesus And you know So often times When we start Talking about Jesus People will All of a sudden Try to remove Change the conversation Right Well let's talk about Marriage Let's talk about All these peripheral issues I want to challenge You to do this When you have a conversation You ask people about Jesus Say I just want to challenge you To read the gospels And find anywhere Where you disagree With something Jesus says Just find Because obviously There's Granted Christians haven't always Been the best Right At following the words Of Jesus Like the 16th century I'm studying the 16th century The puritanical movement I mean we were killing Each other the Christians Because like If you kneeled in church We'd kill you Because we don't like kneeling You know If you had a cross That was an iconoclast You know Fauxpas If you were Irish You know There was just all these things That we did You know That the English did And different people did There was all these things That were happening But if you look at The words of Jesus The words of Jesus Are very hard To besmirch in any way And so one of the things I ask is If you're willing to do that And have a conversation About Jesus My next question would be Well if you can't find anything Where Jesus said something You wouldn't agree to Why don't you follow Jesus?

I mean to have Actually have that conversation That's the kind of boldness That I think we actually Need to step into And that's the boldness That Nehemiah has here And it's the boldness Of Joan of Arc Which ends up At 19 year old She is captured By the British Taken to the stake And burned alive For her faith Because she wouldn't Renounce that God Was speaking to her She would not renounce And they said Do you have any requests?

She said I request communion They gave her communion They weren't supposed To give her communion Because she was a heretic And they were Protestant Supposedly And then she said One other request I request that you Hold a cross up High enough So I can see it Above the flames And they had a They didn't have a cross there And so I guess From what I read Somebody made one Out of sticks Whittled one out of sticks And held it As she was burned alive For her faith Courage Courage As we look at this idea Of what courage is One of the things You're going to see And go to verse 2 And this is so powerful So the king asked me Why does your face Look so sad When you're not ill?

This can be nothing But sadness of heart And it says this Circle that I was very much afraid But I said to the king I was very much afraid One of the things I don't like In a lot of Modern worship And books Is this idea That we're As Christians We're supposed to be Unafraid I understand That being unafraid Is We have moments of that But Courage is not being unafraid Courage is employed When you are afraid Courage is the thing That overcomes fear It is just like That faith Is not faith If it's not overcoming doubt You actually have to have doubt In order to have faith Because Faith Without doubt Is just called foregone conclusion You actually don't need courage If you're unafraid And there are moments Where we're unafraid I've had moments Where I'm unafraid Think of Ralphie In Christmas Story Right That'll be on soon And he's with the bully And finally He's like Ah Ah Ah You know Just going off And he's totally Unafraid There are moments of that But what do we see here With Nehemiah Nehemiah was afraid But then he did What he had gone to do You see Courage is just doing it Courage isn't Not being afraid And so granted There are times Where we are unafraid But courage is that moment Where we step up That is that moment Where we step out Courage is a verb And so I would encourage you If you are afraid One of the best things You can do Is ask the Lord To give you wisdom James 1 5 or 6 Ask for wisdom Find out why you're afraid Because if you don't understand You'll never win the victory Over fear If you don't understand Why you're afraid And so things that Used to make me afraid No longer make me afraid I still have things That do cause me fear But many things Once I understood What it was I was able to attack it Joan of Arc Goes and asks Joan of Arc goes And to these places Like Nehemiah does He overcomes the fear Jesus was afraid In the garden Do not Do not Diminish Or discount yourself If you have fear The key is Whether you have fear Or not Go do it Go stand up And know What God is calling you to So we see that That courage is an action More than a feeling Courage is an action Courage doesn't mean I don't think you have to Feel courageous To be courageous It just means you did it You can be scared to death But if you did it You ever been You know Somebody out in the ocean You're scared to drop in On a wave Or you know Something like that Or jump out of a plane You're terrified But you do it Did it discount the courage Because you were afraid When you did it No Just go be afraid And do it Step up What big ask Because you never know The favor that might be Available to you Unless you ask That's the next point Nehemiah asked With unbridled Godly desire Unbridled Verse 4 The king said to me What is it you want Then I prayed to the God of heaven And I answered the king If it pleases the king If your servant Has found favor in your sight Let him send me To the city in Judah Where my ancestors Are buried So I can go And rebuild it God is looking For people That have rebuilt his city That city might be Your marriage That city might be Your business That city might be Your emotional life That might be A wreck right now God can rebuild it I've seen too many Emotional lives rebuilt You might feel hopeless Desperate And we do live In a desperate world We were telling you You can have Whatever you want Right The world tells you You can have Whatever you want How's that going Just look around It's not going well That God has called us To be a rebuilder And he's called us To this restructuring And so the question is Are we willing to ask And go big Go to verse 4 again The king said to me What is it you want You will never know The answer unless you ask You will never know The favor That might be available To you Unless you step out You will never know The life that might exist Unless you ask her To marry you And she says yes And the favor that might be You know upon you Because you had the courage To ask I got to tell this story Because I told it last time And it wasn't part of the notes But I just failed miserably When I asked my wife To marry me And my proposal We had gone to I had taken her to San Francisco Got up 5 in the morning I picked her up at her house And her mom was in on it And we flew to San Francisco To Coit Tower And we were walking The city was awesome Went to Nordstrom's I bought her some shoes And it was a great day I was all ready I had the ring My brother helped me Get the ring And it all set up And we went up to Coit Tower It was a beautiful day And we got there And I was like Now's the moment And so I got to this one area And as I was walking around To do it There was this school bus Of kids That had gotten out For like a field trip And everywhere I went I was like getting more nervous Like walking around And I was like a magnet For like 9 year olds You know They were everywhere So finally I came around The corner And there was like A bathroom there I think Or something Or a utility closet It still had an okay view And I'm like Hey Carrie look over there And she looked away And I got down on my knee And right then Like 29 year olds Come around the corner They're walking behind me She turns around I'm there And she looks down At me Not down on me But at me And I was like Will you bury me Or something like that You know what I mean She said no I won't bury you No You know I just fumbled it out It was this moment You know That was just I just totally blew it But it worked She's here Made it happen You never know the favor You know One of the things I have found Is that you know When God's favor is upon you Nothing can stop it Nothing can stop God's favor Nothing So when it comes to like Are we going to build this building Is there a permitting process Is this going to happen in my life Is that going to happen I just I just I know I'm under God's favor And if it doesn't happen If I don't get it If a permit doesn't come through God's protecting me Like as long as you're making Straight paths for your feet Like God is protecting you I want to say When you have courage to ask Ask boldly Ask big And just know Go in God's favor I mean God wants to favor you God already favors you He wants to ride upon your request He wants to run with you Into the Godly ambition and desire He wants you to have dreams To do things He wants to be a part of that And Nehemiah was someone That said My heart is breaking For another people Can I go And he God put him in the right place At the right time And everything was stacked against him He could have been killed for this There was an opportunity cost You know Maybe there is a relationship You know Cost That maybe The relationship might be broken If you ask a certain question Like Will you forgive me Or whatever the question might be Or Do you love me Or There is a cost sometimes To step out But if we are going to have healing If we are going to have reconciliation We need To do that And so Nehemiah The next thing you see is this Is the king says What do you want And I love that The next thing is Then I prayed To the God of heaven Then I prayed To the God of heaven So that he took that request And he enshrouded it in prayer And I love that it is a micro prayer In the moment It isn't like the night He probably was like Worshipping But I mean This is a micro prayer Like don't underestimate Micro prayer He is just like Then I prayed to God Like how much time Did he have to pray to God You know Excuse me King Artaxerxes I will just be a moment here You know Maybe he did But it looks like this micro prayer And God answers micro prayer I don't think that That is in there Because it is not important God wants to be with you Throughout your day As you take ground And I put the final thing Was this God's favor was upon Nehemiah And is irreplaceable You can't replace God's favor You can't buy God's favor And I have seen God's favor removed I have seen pastors Who continue to move And they have obviously Sometimes in the end Been caught for sin or whatever But I have just noticed Sometimes I have seen the anointing go Sometimes the season just ends And God is like It is just over But I have seen And God gives favor to who he wants When he wants And he removes it And there is nothing wrong with him Saying I am going to remove the favor For this I still love you I have got a different thing for you But God's favor is irreplaceable God favors you He favors you enough To die on the cross And he has things He has called you to do He has things He has asked you to do There's things He wants to walk with you On the side And he wants to give you favor As you do that He just wants you to ask Ask big Don't be afraid And explore courage Explore courage in your life God has a great story for you He wants to write But he wants you in the right chapter Amen Let's stand if you would I want to bless you It's time for our communion If you have your communion Take a moment To hold the communion I want to let you know By next month We're going to be having The option for a live communion as well Or a come forward communion Where you'll have bread and wine And you'll be able to Our bread and grape juice Is what we use In the Protestant tradition But we'll have that here After the service So you can come forward For that But we're still going to have This as well And in the book of Luke Jesus Talks about that opportunity cost That he took On the cross It says he took bread And he gave thanks Let's just do that for a moment I realize I tend to focus On my problems More than I give thanks Let's just focus on his body For a moment Give thanks We thank you God Thank you God Thank you for where you put us Jesus said this is my body It's my body And I gave it for you Do this in remembrance of me If you want to break it Let's break it Symbolizing his broken body Let's take that Next Jesus Talked about the blood That Was shed for the remission Not Just the covering The remission East is to west He takes it away God wants to forgive your sins He has forgiven your sins And sometimes he's waiting For you To forgive yourself He's already done that Let's focus Just for a moment On the blood of Jesus God Asks us We ask forgiveness God For our sins In the same way After the supper He took the cup And he said This cup is the new covenant In my blood Which has been poured out For you Let's take the cup I want to bless you If you want to Receive prayer After the service We're going to have A prayer team up here Want to pray for you If you've never made a decision To follow Jesus And you're like Man You're speaking my language You'll know If God's speaking to you Right now You'll know It's an opportunity There's a cost There's a risk For sure You've got to risk Your life to do it Come forward We have people here That want to tell you What it means to follow Jesus You can follow Jesus today If you need just prayer Please come forward Don't hesitate Come forward for prayer If you just want to Sit silent afterward You can use the front row As well If you want to find out About our church Go to the next steps table They will give you All the information Get you baptized Next week is baptism If you want to get baptized Get baptized next week I'll be in the tank Happy to baptize you If you need some fellowship Stop by at our cafe Say hi over there To those peeps On the way out If you extend your hands I want to bless you Lord Jesus I pray You say that To Abraham Whoever we bless Will be blessed And so God We I choose to bless This people With your Courage God And An acceptance Of our fear God And then The ability To overcome That fear Through courage I pray for a question God That each of them Would have a question Jesus On their heart They have a question They would ask It's like Artaxerxes Was ask a question They have a question To ask their spouse They have a question To ask their boss They have a question To ask their teacher They have a question To ask a stranger You're going to Introduce them to tomorrow But these questions Are powerful And we pray for your favor And in that moment Micro prayer We pray in that moment God Favor Favor I would say also I feel like There's a word The Lord's giving me Right now That some of you Don't understand How much favor God has upon you And how much He loves you You don't understand And there's this Massive favor And you're walking In it But you're not You're not using it God has you favor And if you begin to ask He will open the doors So we bless Your people with favor We bless the margin In their lives Healing And the rebuilding Of the walls now And the rebuilding Of these gates For the next 45 days Or this 52 days Bless this stronghold Of this community The bricks and mortar Of this community And all the things We're doing in the community Around the country Or around the city And we just send you out now In the name of the Father The Son And the Holy Spirit Amen
