to receive the word, but we thank you so much for in Jesus. Let we pray. Amen. The book of First Kings chapter 18, verses 22 through 26. Then Elijah said to them, I'm the only one of the Lord's prophets left. But Baal has 450 prophets. Get two bulls for us. Let BA's prophets choose one for themselves and let them cut it into pieces and put it on the wood, but not set fire to it. I will prepare the other bull and put it on the wood, but not set fire to it.

Then you call on the name of your God, and I will call him the name of the Lord. The God who answers by fire. He is God. Then all the people said, what you say is good. Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, choose one of the bulls and prepare it first since there are so many of you. Call on the name of your God, but do not light the fire. So they took the bull, given them and prepared it. Then they called in the name of Baal from morning till noon.

Baal, answer us, they shouted. But there was no response, no one answered. And they danced around the altar they had made. This is the word of the Lord. Well, good morning, church. Good to have you this morning. As we dive back into First Kings, I think it says Elijah 18, uh, on your ver on your notes, no Book of Elijah, just FYI before any of you email me about that. Uh, before I start, if you were in Gen Z, tonight is our Bible study.

Uh, with that, if you have your Bibles, turn them to the book of First Kings chapter 18, verse 22 to 26.

Jeff, just read it. Uh, I've been realizing a lot of people have been pulling up to, um, the service and have not ever read the Bible. Uh, we have a lot of that. And they, I start in a, in a series and I'm halfway through. It's the first time they've come and they don't know what's going on. So lemme give you a little backstory. This is before the time of Jesus. You have a, uh, the Kingdom of Israel has been split into two kingdoms.

There's been division. You have Judah and you have Israel. And Israel has gone against the way of God. And they have a king, uh, named Ahab and a wife named Jezebel. Maybe you've heard the name Jezebel before. That's where it comes from. It, it, she symbolizes everything that that name can mean. And, uh, they are going after false gods. She's from Edia, which is north, uh, in the North, and they're going after the Baals.

And Baal is a God of fertility. He's a God that they would, uh, sacrifice children to. There was all this stuff with Baal worship, and it was obviously against what God wanted. God wants to be monotheistic. He wants to be the only God that you worship him. And so, uh, in order, in an act of grace, God sent them a prophet. That prophet was named Elijah. And Elijah now has, uh, started out in the story, uh, going to the king and telling him where that there were some issues going on to come back to God.

And then God moved him around a bit. You can get back into the series on Spotify if you want. You can find Sea Change podcast. You can get, listen to the whole series to see what God did. But God now has moved him back into a place where he is, uh, uh, back in the nation of Israel. He has come from being away and is speaking once again. And there was all these prophets of Baal that are in the nation that have been talking to the King Ahab.

But there's also godly prophets as well. You remember from a few weeks back that Obadiah had hid some prophets of the Lord. So you have these prophets of the Lord. And now we have a confrontation. A couple weeks ago I said that if you were gonna have the life you want, you're probably gonna have to have a confrontation at some points in your life. You're gonna have to confront yourself. You're gonna have to confront maybe others.

You're gonna have to confront your habits. You're gonna have to have a confrontation. And we see that confrontation here lived out when Elijah says to Ahab and to the people, go get all the prophets of Baal. And we are gonna meet at Mount Carmel. Mount Carmel overlooks the valley of Armageddon, uh, interestingly. And he says, we're gonna meet up there and we're gonna have showdown. And on that showdown, we're gonna see who is God.

That's where we are in the story. And that's where we find ourselves today. There's two key words I want you to write down on your notes. If you don't have them, you can also find 'em always on our homepage. See change.church.org. They're always downloadable at the top. If you're at home, here's the keywords. The first key word is, is sacrifice. That's, you can circle that. It's already in your notes. We're gonna look at personal sacrifice today.

And the second part of the message, what are you sacrificing to? To whom are you sacrificing? All of us are sacrificing to someone or to something. Every single one of us might be yourself. We'll get into that in a moment. It's the first word, sacrifice. And what are you willing to sacrifice? And then the other word is conviction. Conviction. So I want you to write down conviction, because you see Elijah here in this passage being a man of conviction, a man who's willing to stand for what he believes.

And so what convicts you will shape your life. And I'm not talking about luxury beliefs of conviction. You say you believe something, but you actually don't live that way. Your values are only values if you live them. Otherwise, they're aspirational values. Uh, if you, you know, have a value of of health, but you treat yourself in a way that doesn't value health, uh, obviously that's not a value, it's an aspiration. It's great to have aspirations, but conviction and then the courage of your convictions to stand.

I have two points today. And the first one has to do with the conviction. If you're not willing to stand alone, which is often where our convictions will lead us, you will fall for anything. If you're not willing to stand alone, you will fall for anything. And then the second is, and this is, I really like this point. Um, I know I wrote it granted, but I do like it 'cause it speaks to me. God's fire consumes sacrifice, the right sacrifice.

All throughout scripture, you see sacrifices being offered and fire being used to consume that sacrifice. So we'll look at that in just a, in just a moment. Go to verse 22 for the first point. If you're not willing to stand alone, you'll fall for anything. Verse 22, then Elijah said to them, am I the only one of the Lord's prophets left? But Baal has 450 prophets? Well, that's interesting because we know from earlier in, in one Kings 1718 that Obadiah another, um, uh, servant of the Lord had hidden, I think it was 150 prophets.

I think that was the right, maybe I'm off. But it was a bunch of prophets. He had hid them from Ahab. So we know that there are other prophets that are in the nation. They have not been killed. We know, according to the scripture, that there's still alive. And so when Elijah asks this, he's not, he's not asking it, I guess he's asking it rhetorically, but he's, he's not asking, Hey, have all the other prophets been killed?

He's saying, where are the other prophets? Why have they not shown up? Why are they not here with me? And then he juxtaposes this against all these false prophets, the ones, the prophets. And you can have those voices be in your life. It could be the things that you read on your phone, the things that you see in the media, whatever the things that just tell you what you want to hear. And so the prophets of Baal, you'll regularly see this with, with prophets that don't follow the word of the God that have no conviction.

They will, they will put their finger in the wind and see which way the king wants to hear. And then they'll tell you what you want, what what the king wants to hear. They'll tell you what you want to hear. And so being surrounded by people that'll speak truth to you, the proverbs say, wounds from a friend can be what? Trusted wounds from a friend. That somebody would say, Hey, I'm willing to give you an emotional blow in a, in a healthy way, but that can be trusted.

Do you have those people in your life? And those convictions? And so Elijah's standing here saying, where are the prophets? Am I the only one left? What is so interesting is he's willing to be the only one left because you see 450 prophets of bail show up at Mount Carmel, and it's one verses 450, verse 22. Then Elijah said to them, I am the only one of the prophets left, but Baal has 450 prophets. What he is saying right now is this, his conviction, his conviction versus the consensus and the people he's trying to lead back to God are a people of consensus.

What do I mean by consensus? It means by looking around and developing your opinions or your way of life or your conviction based on the cultural current of the day. It is conviction versus consensus. And I will tell you that we live in a world of consensus. You have seen that, especially over the last, I don't know, I would say definitely since 2008, I saw a big shift where there was this massive movement of consensus.

What does everybody think? What is the popular thing to say? And then we begin to start, um, paying homage, whether it's in a social media post, whether it's whatever it is, but to let people know, whatever the, the world is saying, I want to be on that side because I'm not willing to be ostracized, to be, to stand alone. People of convictions will, a conviction will stand alone or at least are willing to stand alone.

I would say having the courage to be able to do that. And you might not have to do that. There might be you might be surrounded by other prophets and people in your life that will, you know, show up with you and be there and they'll, you know, they will charge into the battle with you and are willing to, to fall on the sword with you and take a bullet for you and for Jesus, that's off. Awesome. But in the end, it always comes down to would you be willing to stand there alone if everyone else said you were wrong?

If you knew Jesus was saying you were right, because one day it does say in the great judgment, there will be a judgment where there won't be a consensus. There'll be one judge God himself with the mediator Jesus before, and hopefully we're under the cover of Jesus, where you'll stand before that God. And, and that, that, how can I say it? That terrifies me in a way, even though I know I'm under the blood of Jesus, it terrifies me.

At least it keeps me honest. And I've always wanted to be a person that can stand before others knowing that I'm gonna stand before Jesus. And that is the thing that matters most. So let me ask you, have you become, have you become a person of consensus where your opinions have kind of moved with the changing culture of the day? Or are you a person of conviction for the word of God? I was watching an Instagram the other day and they were, uh, talking to this one pastor who had beliefs that I would consider antithetical to the gospel, to the Bible.

And there was a person, street preacher. You see these kids, they just, you know, it's mostly a Gen Z thing, but they'll, they'll roll out with a microphone, you know, and they'll just like, you just see 'em doing this. If you're on social media, you'll see this. So they're asking 'em questions, right? And the this like, you know, uh, gen Z or young person just kept quoting scriptures and the pastor, they had their collar on and everything the pastor said, yeah, but, but that was cultural.

That was cultural. And he just came back. He's all like, the word of God does not change based on the culture. The word of God is, is sufficient. He was willing to stand for that. And so the question is, are you a person of conviction? And would you stand for that? That's really, really key. In verse 24, you're gonna see that the people Elijah was trying to call back were people of consensus, right? Go to verse 24. Uh, actually I'll go to verse 23.

Let's set it up a little bit. Get two bulls for us. Let Baals prophets choose for them one for themselves, and let them cut it into pieces and put it on the wood, but not set fire to it. I will prepare the other bull and put it on the wood, but not set fire to it. Then you will call on the name of the Lord your God, excuse me. Then, then call on the name of your God and I will call on the name of the Lord, the God who answers by fire.

That's key. We're gonna get to that in a second. For he is God. Then all the people said, we're with you, Elijah, because we know that God is going to do that, and we're willing to stand up today behind you, and we're gonna rally behind you and wait for the word of God. That's not what they said. What did they say? What you say is good. Why? 'cause they can sit on the sidelines and wait for the fire. And once the fire is revealed, oh yeah, that's the God we're gonna serve.

We have a tendency, myself included, to do that all the time, right? To be tempted, just to wait on the sidelines to see what's gonna happen before we actually stand up for our beliefs for other people. This is really key. You ever had a somebody who's gone astray and no one stands by 'em anymore, but you're willing to stand by them? Have you ever been that person that through thick or thin stands, stands by them? I'm not saying that you condone maybe what they have done, but you are willing to stand by.

Or have you been the person that when you've been misjudged, everyone flees like cockroaches, when the light comes on and there you are alone, you want to surround yourself with people of conviction. And the way to surround yourself with people of conviction and not consensus is to be a person of conviction with grace. That's a different sermon. Um, what you say is good. If you've ever heard of the I idea of he centrism, Helio, centrism is the idea that the sun is the center of the universe.

And you might have heard of a guy named Galileo, and I can never say Galileo without saying Galileo, Galileo Firo. We have a picture of Galileo coming up. There he is. There's our boy Galileo, that's him. He had this idea, he had crazy idea. He kept looking at the scars. You know, the earth is not the center of the universe. Now, pet me had said that it's Aristotle had said that it's, uh, the Roman Catholic church of the Church of the Day had said that it is, but Galileo said, no, it isn't.

And Galileo was forced in front of the Spanish Inquisition. You never expect a Spanish inquisition, right? Thank you. Somebody was watching Saturday Night Live in the 1970s. He was forced in front of the Spanish Inquisition, and he was asked to recant and he did recant. Actually, he recanted. It is, it is, it is rumored that after he recanted, he whispered, yet it still moves right? Now, I gotta tell you on an issue of non salvific importance, this is a different question than is Jesus Christ's Lord.

And I'm not sure in front of the Spanish Inquisition, I might've said, you know what? I think the sun might just revolve around the earth. Now that I think about it, I might agree with you, right? It's a conviction, right? There's convictions that we're gonna stand for, I think in regard to me are hopefully us. The things that are salvific, the things that the gospel, those are the most important black and white issues that we stand for.

And so this is a bit of an interesting story. You put Galileo back up there, I like his picture. Um, what we found out is he ended up spending his, the rest of his life in, in Florence, under house arrest, uh, for his beliefs. Uh, but he wasn't killed. And in 1992, you might remember famously that Pope John Paul, uh, recanted and actually forgave him. And, and they said that Galileo was actually, he was proven, right?

This is just one story. You can take it down. Now, you take Galileo down, Figaro, while it's might be controversial, there was a scientific consensus that went against him. There was a religious consensus. And you actually see a lot of that happening in culture today. What do you believe? And are you willing to stand for what you believe no matter what the consequences are? And I said Galileo was forced through a threat of torture to, to go against that.

It's different than if it was, but I put Jesus is looking for people of conviction in a world ruled by consensus. Uh, this is a bunch of messianic foreshadowing again, because we see Elijah back to the passage. Elijah willing to stand up at great threat to his own life, willing to stand up, uh, and and, and speak the name of God. And this is once again, this messianic foreshadow. And we see Jesus. Jesus has a really incredible verse, uh, says in John 1632, behold the hour is coming.

Indeed it has come when you will be scattered each to his own home and will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone. For the Father is with me. Is the Father with you enough for you? Or do you need more? This is one of the great truths that will create an anchor and create a character and a perseverance in you that if you believe that you have a father who loves you, that based on your convictions, whatever they be in the gospel, that you're willing to stand up for them.

But it takes courage. And I especially believe in this age, it's gonna take courage. So that's the first thing that we saw. Are you a person that conviction? What are your convictions? And do you need to reassert your convictions? The second thing we see is sacrifice. And this is really kind of the, the crux of the message for me, because I think it comes down to the personal underpinnings that give you the ability to have conviction.

If you are sacrificing to everything but God in your life and you're not being a living sacrifice, as the scripture says that we should be, then we end up losing our moral clarity and character sometimes. And so this idea of sacrifice. And so I want to challenge you today to by the end of the message, by the end of this point, to reassert yourself on the altar of God. Because we know that God, this is the second point.

God consumes sacrifices. Verse 23, get two bulls for us. Let baals prophets choose one for themselves and let them cut it into pieces. And I will put it on the wood, but I will not set fire to it. I will prepare the other bull and put it on the wood, but not set fire to it. Then you call on the name of your God and I will call on the name of the Lord. The God who answers circle answers by fire, circle fire. He is God. You get two things here. God consume sacrifice.

If you make yourself a living sacrifice, he will consume you. You want to be consumed by God. Uh, he has an everlasting fire. His consumption does not burn up the product. Look at Moses burning bush, but the bush isn't being destroyed. When you present yourself as a living sacrifice, God will consume you with fire, but he will not destroy the sacrifice. He will consume it without your destruction. That's powerful. 'cause we don't wanna be just burned to a crisp by God, right?

So we see that's the the first thing that we see, um, in that, that we see this God of fire. So he brings fire. You want that fire. So when you give yourself as a sacrifice, God's fire is going to be on you. God's fire is amazing. If you haven't experienced it before, start offering your life to God and see what the fire looks like. Ask for the fire God. And the second thing you see there is you get an answer. I think God's answers are more understandable or more frequent when you're offering yourself to him, as opposed to everything else in this world has to offer.

I actually think the answers of God become muted when we are offering ourselves the everything. But God. God, why aren't you speaking to me? Why haven't you answered on me on this point? But yet I'm gonna sacrifice my morality to this. I'm gonna sacrifice my flesh to this. I'm gonna sacrifice my relations to this. You have all these other idols that we're sacrificing to. It says here that when God consumes a sacrifice, and you have to ask yourself, do you want to be that sacrifice, that living sacrifice, it says you'll get fire and answers.

I like that. I need more answers because this is a rough world to live in, right? I need more wisdom and I need more answers. And God wants you to be that. And so, um, when we see God's fire in scripture, we see it. It it represents a few things. It represents his presence. And you could do a scriptural search. You find your favorite AI and ask it the question. Explain fire and scripture in regard to sacrifices and gimme all the verses.

It'll bring these things up to you if, um, it's actually a good search tool presence. You see God's presence. You see God's power. When God's fire comes, it shows purity, it shows purpose, it shows refinement, it shows revelation. Who doesn't want all that? But do we want it enough to become the living sacrifice? So Elijah here is saying, here is a sacrifice, God that I'm giving to you in this way. And gimme just give you two verses about God's fire.

Leviticus 9 24 Fire comes out and consumes the offering at the tabernacle in Leviticus 9 24. You can read through that passage. I'll give you one more. When Solomon dedicates the temple, fire falls and consumes the sacrifice in Second Chronicles seven, one over and over again, God's fire consumes sacrifice. What do you want be to be consumed by the, and I'm gonna keep calling it 'cause I love it. The, the the shiny object from hell, right?

Um, will give you a lot of things you can sacrifice yourself to over and over again. Get a chatbot. Those are the new ones. Now, relational chatbot, you can find a, a relational boy, you've heard about it, right? A boyfriend or girlfriend. And they're just amazing. They never say you're wrong. They always compliment you, never speak truth to you. Um, you can just sacrifice. You can find your relationship. They can offer you everything you need except God himself.

See those scriptures there? So you see this. And so I wrote, I wrote, everyone is sacrificing in the notes. Everyone is sacrificing to someone. Verse 23 A, it says, go get two bulls. Let Baals prophets choose one for themselves. So that's the first thing I saw. There's two bulls there. And he says, you can choose. And I see that as a point of asking ourselves on a regular basis. What are you choosing? Every week we're starting a brand new week.

Right now it's the beginning of a new week. You have another week right now, all of us to rewrite the story of your life. Start fresh this week. What do you want it to look like? The dreams, the aspirations, the choices you will make. Some of them will be good, some of them will be bad. But you have the opportunity to choose a bull this week, so to speak. You have an opportunity to choose. All of us are going to sacrifice to someone.

Could be God, could be ourselves, could be someone else, or to something. Could be reading the word. Could be prayer, could be a whole bunch of myriad of other things that go in an opposite direction. You get to choose a bull this week. I'm just using that metaphorically, which bull you're going to choose. And so we see a choice there. The second thing that I really thought was interesting is you see the choice there of what you're gonna choose is in, uh, part B of verse 23.

That Elijah doesn't mess with the sacrifice. Once he has a sacrifice, he trusts God with the sacrifice. And so it says, I will prepare the other bull and put it on the wood, but I will not set fire to it. I have found that I sacrificed, especially let's say when I was sacrificing my dating life. I took two years off. It was one year I gave to God. I said to God, I wasn't gonna date when I was, I was in my mid twenties.

I said I wasn't gonna date. And one year ended up being two years. I felt like God said one year it ended up being two. Uh, and the temptation to set fire to that sacrifice or to manipulate the sacrifice of my own was really strong. Well, you start rationalizing, right? Well, you know, she goes to church, God, you know, just, it's just coffee. It'll just be a coffee. It's not a date, you know, we're just friends. Whatever, you know, whatever the thing is.

There was just always this temptation, which I, I I didn't take up. But there was always this temptation to rationalize the sacrifice. I found something about holiness that's really interesting. Holiness never needs to rationalize itself. It never does. Sin always says, well, what about, what if maybe when you get to part two of the sentence, it's like, Hey, I want to give this to God if there's a conjunction, but maybe if how I find that everything after that is the wrong bull, right?

Or it's all bull. I guess I could say it that way. See what I did there? So you see what they're doing here is he is not willing to mess with the sacrifice. Have you sacrificed something to God? But you're always messing with the sacrifice. You're always trying to set it on fire a little bit. Or is your sacrifice left to God and to his devices and not your own? That's really hard. It's really, really hard to, once you make a sacrifice to stick with it.

I've been trying these little fast where I've been doing fast for different things in my life. 'cause I find that they're the only way that I can get past certain things that are happening in my life if I make a vow. Because there's a, there's a verse that says, do not do rashly. Go rashly. Go into a vow with the Lord. So I'm like, I know I've said I'm not really terrified of God 'cause I'm under his grace, but I don't like, I don't wanna make a vow.

I don't really wanna see what happens if I make a vow. So lately I've just been making a ton of little vows to God for the next week. I'm gonna keep my mouth shut about this for the next week. God, I vow this to you. Uh, you know, whatever the thing is, I've been making these vows to God. It actually works for me. It might not work for you, but it actually works really, really well for me to make these things and then don't touch it.

That's what we see. So what are you gonna be sacrificing? He trusts God with the sacrifice. Are you trusting God with the sacrifice? What are you willing to sacrifice? And then this is probably the, the point that hit me more than any other point in the sermon. Verse 26, don't expect good answers from bad sacrifices. Verse 26. So they took the bull, given them, that's the prophets of Baal and prepared it. Then they called on the name of Baal for morning until noon.

I dunno, four to six hours. Baal, they answer us, they shouted, but there was no response, no one answered. And they danced around the altar that they had made. And so if you look deeper into the passage, you know about Baal worship, they would have knives and they would, they would cut themselves until they bled. They would dance and they would scream and they would, you know, um, just do all these incantations. And they would just dance before this, this, this sacrifice waiting for an answer, waiting it for it to give them what they wanted.

And I have found in my life so many times, I have something that I think is gonna give me what I want. And I sacrifice myself on the idol of that thing. And I'm waiting for it. And the more, and I'm just dancing, I think the more I dance, it's coming alive. It's gonna gimme the answer I want. The fire is gonna come except the fire that comes burns me. And the fire it comes, doesn't give the answer that I want. And it never leaves me sad.

Five, because God has made us with this incredible design. There's only one thing that can fulfill you. And that's him. It's called the law of diminishing returns. What does that mean? It means the more you go after a thing, the less it's going to fulfill you, and the more you're gonna go after it, and it's gonna get less and less and less. And so you're gonna do more and more. You see that right now with the deviant behavior in our society, more and more deviant because they're offering everything.

And it doesn't sacrifice it, it, it doesn't suffice because they're dancing around the wrong bowl. So this is just my question for you. 'cause this, this is so good for me. I'm preaching to myself. You could, you couldn't even be here today and I could just preach in empty room and I'd be happy today because I just see the metaphor of like these bulls, all these bulls. What am I gonna sacrifice? And ultimately, I had the, the, the lan from See Narnia, I was gonna show, but I ended up not showing it.

But where Lan, Jesus sacrifices himself. He models this for us. He sacrifices himself. And then he asked us, 'cause I know it was Harry that talked last week about us getting to be on the throne next to God. That was so good. Isn't that amazing? We get to be on the throne next to God. You know what else you get to be on with him? It's called the cross if you want to be on the throne. He says, you gotta go to the cross.

And so what bull are you sacrificing? What are the bulls in your life that you're sacrificing? Can you identify what those are? And are they giving you the answer you want? Because if you're just getting awesome answers, if you're just like, Hey, these bolt, man, this is satisfying me. I love it. Then you know what? Go after it just, I just chase it. I, I say go after it 10 times as hard as you're going after it, just keep going after it, okay?

'cause I know based on the scripture and based on how God designed us, that you will come to the end of yourself and you'll say, there is a God that we want to serve. So I close with, with the practical takeaway. Well, I actually, there's one more statement. I, I put the altered devoid of offerings will bring no answer. And where there is no sacrifice, there will be no fire. The altered devoid of offerings will bring no answers.

And where there is no sacrifice, there will be no fire. I want us to be a church that is full of fire. I want the fire of God to reign down on this church in our worship, in our love for others. I want the fire of God to consume us as a church. And so the practical takeaway is this, prepare the sacrifice. What would it look like this week is his. Remember he said, go choose two bulls. Go prepare it. What would it look like for you to prepare the sacrifice?

Maybe you need to go home and say this outta my house. You shall not pass. Maybe you have something. Maybe it's you're deleting something on here. Maybe it's, I don't know. You know your bulls. I don't have to figure out your bulls. You know what? They're right now they're going bing, bing, bing, bing, bing. Go prepare the sacrifice. Make a vow of the Lord, and then put your crawl up on that altar and say, God, just consume me with your fire.

Because you know the fire that he brings will not destroy you. It'll set you free. Amen. Amen. Let's stand if you would, I'm gonna have the worship team come forward. We're gonna give you a chance to respond in worship. And then in prayer, we're gonna have a prayer team come forward, we'll give you a chance to respond to this. Let's respond in our heart right now. Just take a moment. Lord, your word speaks to us. Your word is powerful.

We love your word. We want to be a sacrifice to you. God, show us the bulls that need to be taken off those altars.
