The book of First Kings chapter 18 verses 36 through 40. And at the time of the offering of the oblation, Elijah the prophet came near and said, oh Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that you are God in Israel and that I'm your servant. And that I have done all these things at your word. Answer me. Oh Lord, answer me that this people may know that you oh Lord are God, and that you have turned their hearts back.

Then the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burn offering and the wood and the stones and the dust, and lick up the water that was in the trench. And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces and said the Lord, he is God the Lord. He is God. And Elijah said to them, seize the prophets of Baal. Let not one of them escape. And they seized them and Elijah brought them down to the Brook Khan and slaughtered them there.

This is the word of the Lord. Right on. Well, good to have you here today. If you have your Bibles open to one Kings 1836 through 40, message is entitled Fire Fall. And you can write it for the, at the top of your notes, there's kind of a key phrase, uh, write on fire on top of your notes on fire. I wanna talk about that today and what it means, because we have gotten to the part in the series, the end of an eight week series where the fire falls.

So if you've been waiting for eight weeks for that fire, here comes the fire. And when we start again next year, uh, getting back into Elijah, 'cause we go every year, kinda like on Netflix, we're gonna drop another eight weeks next year. Uh, that downpour is actually gonna come. We're gonna see that rain come and it represents two things. And so, uh, the question I have is, as I say on fire, I want to ask you this, what does it mean to be on fire for God?

What does it mean to have a life that burns hot for God? A life where God is consuming the sacrifice of your life? You sense his fire and that fire is not regularly going out. I think in the past, one of the things I thought, especially when I was younger, is that fire meant emotion, right? Fire means I'm just feeling this incredible joy all the time. I'm always smiling, right? Um, I'm full of God's power all the time.

The temptation comes, I throw it behind me. Depression comes, get back, depression. I will, I will cast you out. You know, you shall not pass. I'm just living for God. And I will say, when I first stepped into a deeper walk in college, I'd been a Christian for a long time, kind of living the, the, uh, life of the first baptism, the death in Christ. And, but I wasn't living a resurrected life. God hit me when I was, uh, about 19 in college, got sober, told the stories.

And I had a season where that, um, thinking about what an Onfi life looks like was very available to me. And maybe you've had that as well. Maybe you had that time where you just burned hot for God, right? It was easier. It was, you were, you were striving, not striving, but you were taking long strides and you were growing in Christ. You weren't stagnant. And the question I asked myself this week was, when was the last time I felt like I grew in Christ?

It's easy to get to a cruising altitude. It's a good altitude, right? It's where you're supposed to be, but you're no longer ascending. You're no longer growing. And so what does it mean to be on fire? And what I realize is on fire doesn't mean emotion. I tend to want those moments. That's why I like, we like worship, right? It's very, very, uh, tactile. It's very, um, you can feel it, right? And when you feel God, it's oftentimes you feel like you're on fire for God.

And what I have found in my life is I can be on fire at the 6:00 PM service and, you know, dead cold by the next morning at nine, depending on what happens in between that, that series. And so I want to talk about what it means to be on fire. And it has a lot to do with God consuming the sacrifice of your life. And I put a couple notes down this, you can write these things down on your own. I, I, I did these, I added these, uh, last night.

You know, to be on fire to God means a few things. And it might not have emotion attached to it. Mother Teresa talked about how she had years with no emotion attached to what she did. The first is you have a surrendered heart. That's if you're on fire, just a heart that surrenders to God, God, I just surrender this to you, you're regularly surrendering. Now that doesn't oftentimes give you that sense of right on fire.

Like, woo, went to the conference, somebody spoke a, a message. We're stepping into dreams. We're taking territory. Just a surrendered heart. I would say that means you're on fire, a pure life purity. If you're walking with a sense of purity or regularly you want to be pure for God, you want holiness in your life and you're seeing regular strides, your life is getting more and more holy before the God, before God. It means you're probably on fire for God.

Uh, courageous faith. You're just willing to, whether you're terrified to step out in courage and just, you know, the, the absence of, of, of fear is not something that always happens when you're courageous. Because courage isn't doing something that isn't hard or fearful. You might be scared to death, but you step forward and do that thing that God's called you to do. Whether you're afraid, you might still be afraid after you do it.

That is being on fire for God, having a compassionate spirit for other, a consistent, you're just drawn to prayer. You just wanna talk to your, you just wanna talk to your father. You just want to be in his word. I would say we need to stop looking at the emotional ground, taking groundbreaking dream summit, finding next level thinking. And just to get to some consistency in our Christian's lives, I'd rather have a church that is full of consistent, obedient, holy believers than one that is calling down fire on a regular basis.

Although I don't mind a little fire. We had some fire on Sunday night last night. And this morning in the worship, God has, God has shifted our worship. And Chris, with you especially, and your, and your leadership is phenomenal, and God is shifting our worship and we're inviting you as a congregation to come with us. You're doing a great job. Had 32 of the worship team, 32 people on our worship team and the media team at my house Friday night.

It was amazing. So we're talking about fire in this passage. You in this, uh, you know, we've been in 17 and 18 of kings for a while and we've just read through the story. We have a couple things that have happened. Do you remember that there's a, an altar that's been built and they, and they're waiting for the, is bales altar gonna be consumed by the fire or is it the, uh, prophet Elijah's altar? And Elijah does this counterintuitive thing of, of dousing the altar with water dousing the altar with water before he calls for the fire.

Now, you wouldn't do that. Now, the one thing I wanted to mention that was interesting is in this passage, and if you missed it, you're missing some of the connections because this 17 and 18 has so many connections to the New Testament to Jesus. We've been talking about 'em for eight weeks. If you haven't heard it, go back and re-listen. It goes back to the Genesis passage, all these things in the passage we encounter God's use of two sacred elements in this passage, fire and water.

And both are deeply woven into scripture's, language of baptism and transformation. There's two types of baptism in the New Testament that you see, right? They're this, they're baptism by water and baptism. By what? Two, not just one. You need them both. We are called, you're not saved according to baptism, but you are commanded to be baptized. I think we have a bunch more people getting baptized. We just get people getting baptized right now.

Got a bunch more next week getting baptized. A lot of young people, most of us in our Gen Z, tons of them getting baptized. We're called to be baptized through water, but we're not supposed to stop there. I gave the analogy that when I got baptized as a, as a young person in my early teens, I spent five years in the water baptism idea, the death in Christ and the cleansing of my sins. But I never got to the point where God empowered me for one reason or another with that bap he would call it a baptism of fire.

There's a lot of controversy about that. I don't think that that needs to look like, you know, Shazam, boom, you're on fire. I think you just start seeing the five characteristics and some more that I just mentioned. You get into an empowered life. Your life feels like it has a little more battery that isn't based on you or your gifts or whatever that thing is. And so we see these two here. Let's talk about water baptism, first of all.

'cause remember, he dallases it first with water. And then what is so interesting, you're gonna see, as you saw here, let's go to, uh, because I'm, uh, the verse 36, 38, excuse me. Go to the end of that. And it says, the fire licked up the water that was in the trench, the water that symbolizes the water, baptism, the baptism into the death of Christ that cleanses us from our sins is licked up by the fire. Because we're not called to live in the baptism of repentance, which is the one that John offered.

There's a baptism of the Holy Spirit, which means you are being empowered. So water baptism means this. And if you've not been water baptized, we wanna water baptize you. We gonna happen in that tub next week. Talk to Pastor Joshua Drea, one of them. They will get you linked up and you're gonna, I think we're dunking like four people next week is what I heard. So if it's three, it's three, it might be five, I don't know.

But some water baptism, when you were baptized, when this water came, like it came here to symbolize it. Water baptism means repentance, death to sin, washing and cleansing. Right? Now, imagine yourself going to a game and you gotta get ready for the game. And so you get all ready for the game. But when you get to the field, you haven't eaten correctly, you haven't been empowered, and all of a sudden you fail on the field.

You don't have the energy, you don't have the power, you haven't done the right things, but you're all ready for the game. I remember I was a kid. If I had a five o'clock game and it was a Saturday, my uniform's on at 10. I don't know about you. I I was like just working on my bat. I didn't know what, I had my socks on, my knee pads. I was ready to go. But you also have to be prepared and you also have to be equipped to be able to play the game.

So the first baptism is that water baptism that cleanses us. And that's what you see in that passage. And Peter, excuse me, uh, Peter says this in Acts chapter two, and once again, this passage is referring to the, the, the baptisms that are to come. God is using that metaphor to draw what is happening with Elijah in this passage. The water first, and then the fire with the water first in our lives, and then the fire, right?

And so it said, Peter says in Acts 2 38, and Peter said to them, repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Boom. That is the power. Now we see that there is some latency or some, some, some hesitation or time in between when the church got baptized and they got the power for living. Jesus says, go to Jerusalem and wait.

I have found that the period of waiting between being water baptized from people and living the empowered life is different for all people. I have found some people that come outta the water. I've been in places that come outta the water speaking in tongues. Ba boom, ow, you might not believe in tongues. Forget you heard that. There's some beliefs that matter that you need to care about Jesus' death on the cross, his blood.

Okay, we can have a discussion about tongues. I've seen him come outta the water, bam, boom, knocked down from the start. Bam. And I've seen people go their entire lives and never experience that for one reason or another. And they live in this cleansing, they're cleansed. They live in what? You know, remember, I believe it was Paul, he was on one of the islands, he was on one of his trips and acts, right? He comes up to these people and they're like, and they said, we believe in Jesus.

And he says, well, you know, have you received the Holy Spirit? They're like, we don't know what that is. And he, they said, we've been baptized in the baptism of John the Baptist. He said, that's not enough. He goes, there was another baptism and we pray for you. And so with that, there was, I don't know, how long was it a year? Was it three or Paul? It took him a while to get to that island. Remember he was persecuting the church. So there was time.

And then all of a sudden they get it later. I don't, I can't tell you what that time or what it looks like. You might never feel any different. For me when it fell, I felt different. I had probably three to six months of like, just felt like I was plugged into like a, you know, a nuclear station of spirituality. And it was awesome. The problem is now I look back at that and I oftentimes think, man, I was, it was so much better then.

I'm way more holy in regard to, not that I'm super holy, but I mean, than I was when I was 19. I was, it was a lot of ups and downs. I was doing a lot of things I still shouldn't do. I was still trying to make good choices or whatever, but I look back at that and be like, man, where is that? I want that back. But if I were to look at the fruit of my life and the consistency of my life, I'll take now more than that. Although I was down at the pier, we were working, you know, with homeless people, we were working with, you know, a whole group of us with prostitutes on down at, um, on Rosecrans.

And we were doing ministry and you know, I was dressing like Jesus, you know, the story, the super long hair and the, and the, and the karate jumper or whatever I was wearing, I don't know, baggy pants and I, whatever. It was awesome. And I wa and there was that moment where, where the Holy Spirit came. And so the first thing I want to say that, that this water baptism is a baptism that says, Hey, I'm no longer walking in sin.

I've been cleansed and I've been baptized into his death. But baptism, if you just stay in the water, you're gonna drown. We're gonna keep you down there just long enough. We soak some more than others, some need it. But when you come out, That is the moment, the empowerment where you are no longer in the first baptism, but you are walking now towards the second baptism, which is the baptism by fire. That is empowerment, that is holiness and that is a new life.

Don't base your spirituality on how you feel. Base your spirituality on how you are living. Acts two, one through four says this, and this is this fi fire. It says, when the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place and suddenly there came from heaven, a sound like a mighty rushing wind. It filled the entire house where they were sitting and divided tongues as a fire appeared on them and rested on each of them.

They were filled with the Holy Spirit, began to speak in other tongues as the spirit gave them utterance. And so we see that there. And so as the spirit gives, if you are not finding yourself growing, and that's one thing in the, in the upcoming year, we're really as a church, wanna work with you individually. We're gonna have surveys where we can regularly, quarterly survey, where are you? How's your spiritual life? Men, women, um, married singles and just maybe 10 questions.

And then we want to help you grow. We wanna be a growing church, an empowered church. But that's the first thing that you see here. The other reason I think sometimes we don't get the fire of the spirit is because the things that we are offering to God are not acceptable to him. I wrote that God's consumption equals acceptance. Not all sacrifices are accepted. Build these altars. We give God some things that are very acceptable to him.

And then we take some other stuff that's not so acceptable. Half measures leaving a little bit for our ourselves. I don't know if you're here last week, but that comfort zone thing was just hitting me all week. I preached it last week and I was like, oh man, I love my comfort zones. And we put all this on this altar. We're like, fire fall, fire fall. Come on, fire, fire. And we're like the prophets of Baal dancing around because we've put things on the altar that aren't acceptable for him.

He doesn't want relationships where you have a carve out for yourself. He doesn't want, he just doesn't want a bunch of carve outs. And so one of the things that I've been realizing is when they put sacrifices down, he will, when when the fire falls, he will, he wants it all. He wants to take everything that you have to offer and the sacrifice that Elijah offers every bit of it. And this is, this really stuck out to me.

I'd never seen this before. So this is super powerful. It takes it all. And if you haven't read this before, it was, I read through this passage multiple times for a couple months preparing for this sermon. And it wasn't until this week where I saw this go back to verse 38, then the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burn offering. Full stop. Now usually that's what we expect, right? You read the Bible, there's one offering, you know, and, and God has fallen multiple times and the the God comes and he consumes the sacrifice.

And you're like, yes, he consumed the sacrifice. But for some reason he didn't stop there in this passage. 'cause let's keep going. In verse 38, he consumed the burnt offering, the sacrifice and the wood and the stones and the dust and licked up the water. That was in the trench as well. You ever seen that? I hadn't seen it. I read that a million times. I just kind of just compartmentalize my house. He takes the sac in my head.

He takes the sacrifice and that. But I didn't realize he took it all. I began to look deeply into what that meant. And I realized, and I found out as I just did more and more study, that all of those components are the things that he is redeeming throughout all of humanity. Let me share what I mean and what these, and what I mean by that. God's fire consumed the offering. Well what's the offering? The offering is symbolic of you sacrificing yourself.

It says in the in, in the scripture that you are, you have become a living what? Sacrifice. Living sacrifice. You're alive, you're sacrifice. But you don't die. So in this passage, when he consumes the offering, the offering in the understanding in the New Testament is you, is it acceptable? Well, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. So give yourself a little bit of a break. You can make some mistakes and God will still accept it.

I'm not saying that he won't accept it, God is, he's very gracious. But we are that offering. The next thing we see is wood. Well what is this? The wood symbolic of? It is the sin that blocked man from God. So not only is he receiving you and the totality of you, he is, he is taking the sin and he is removing it. He's consuming 'cause you're offering your sin to him as well. Jesus was a what? Sin offering. So God can consume sin.

He was a sin offering. We see that wood is symbolic of sin. Well how do we know that? Well, remember Isaac, remember uh, Abraham's son back in January when we were here, what did Abraham put on the back of Isaac? The wood. 'cause he was gonna be a, they were gonna, he was gonna be a sacrifice. It says in Genesis 22, 6. And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on. Isaac, his son. He took his hand, the fire, the knife.

So they both went to them together. Jesus carried a cross. The cross was made of wood. Those cross represents the sin. Jesus died on the cross. So now he is, he is receiving you as a sacrifice. He's receiving your sin. Don't hide your sin from him. We all hide our sins. I want you to hide your sin. You don't hide it from him. You put it on the altar. Say God. And, and I was just reading in to you. If you've not read the pursuit of God, I tried to get 60 copies.

I couldn't get 'em. Amazon, not quick enough. Alright? Not quick enough for me. If you have you, it is non-sequitur. Have you guys gone to Amazon to buy something that says we can be there between 2:00 AM and 6:00 AM You're not coming to my house, bro. At 2:00 AM Of course you can get messed with wood is symbolic of saying give Jesus your sin. Right? He says in Tozer, in the end of chapter two, he has this incredible prayer of like, I don't wanna let go of this.

Give it to God. So the wood, what about the stones? What are they symbolic of? Well, we know what the stones are symbolic of. Because in earlier in one kings 18, Elijah took 12 stones according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the Lord came saying, Israel shall be your name. He is consuming up Israel as well because the gospel goes first to the Jew and then to the Gentile. He will have the Jewish heart back, he will have the Jewish nation back.

The Bible was clear of that. And he is going to take them up as well in the end when he takes up the gentile, the goem is what you would be called as a gentile as well at the same time. So not only is he re re renewed individuals, he's removed sin and he's also consuming Israel here as a sacrifice. One Peter Stones. You say, well the stones, what else could they meet? Well Peter picks up on this in one Peter two, five.

We're doing Bible study today. You ready? In one Peter two, five, you yourselves are like what? Living. You are living sacrifices and living boom. And God, you know, how hot does it have to be for a stone to be broken up and gone? Says you. He's taking that up. And so he's taking us up in that. And then we have the dust. What does the dust mean? Well go to Genesis two, seven, then the Lord formed the man out of the, from the ground and breathe into his nostrils, the breath of life.

And the man became a living creature. God is going to consume all of humanity. Any, any human, any person who wants to offer themself. It is all of our humanity. He is taking that up as well. And that last thing we see in there is the water. Interesting. It says he licked up, lapped up. I look at different versions, licked up, lapped up the water. Just, just imagine the fire dancing and just taking all that water up to it was just, there was nothing left.

He says, I want it all takes it all. And what is he symbolically doing with that when he does that? He's showing in the be in forward as we move forward that the new baptism will lick up the old baptism, the one of water which we're called to do. But you're not called to live in that baptism supposed to remember, it's supposed to be thankful for it. But he's trying to get you to a second baptism. The baptism of empowerment.

And so you see that Romans six, three and four, lemme just read it. Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ were baptized into His what? Death we were buried. Therefore with him baptized into his death and or that just as Christ was raised from the dead, by the glory of the Father, you too might walk in newness of life. When you come out of the water, you gotta walk away from the death in Christ and into the new life.

And that is where the Holy Spirit meets you and changes you. Amen. How do we do it? I don't think it's, I don't think it's too hard of a formula. The hardest formula is convincing yourself to let go of the things that hold you back is so hard. I remember having things in my life. I'm like, God, how? How? I don't even, I didn't want to get rid of this Tozers book. Chapter two, end of chapter two. He has a prayer. It's chapter two or three Tozer, the pursuit of God.

He has a prayer for that. And it's gonna hurt for you to pray it. It's so painful. I prayed it a bunch of times this week. It's so painful. It's like, ah, no, I will pray it. I will pray it. I will pray it. If you seek him, you will what? Find him. You'll find him. DL Moody said this, I used to pray that God would fill me, then I prayed, he would set me on fire. Do you wanna be on fire? That's a good question. I mean, do you, do you wanna be on fire?

Because if you're on fire, you're not gonna have a lot of room for yourself. But the thing that you do, the life you live is gonna be way better. Or do we want to have something? I had a, I was looking at safes the other day and they have ratings on the safe. And you know what the ratings are for? They're fire. What? Fireproofed. Hmm, fireproof this one. 30 minutes. This one. Two hours. This one's six days, this one forever.

Man. How much do we just fireproof ourselves? If you have fireproofed yourself, it's time to get out of the safe. It's a good thing when California wildfires come, it's a bad thing when the, when the fire of God is surrounding everything and not consuming the sacrifice because we just keep offering half measures. This is not a word of guilt, it's a word of want. It's what you want. I'll tell you, for the most part I have found this.

I'll tell you one thing I've found in churches. People are gonna do what they want. I, I've just found that I find it's the rare individual that regularly doesn't do what they want. Do less of what you want every time you're in Costco. Now, anytime you see that safe, you gotta think to yourself from now on, am I fireproofing myself to God? So here's the practical takeaways and then we'll go into communion. We're gonna have Joe come forward to lead us in communion.

One, whether you mean it or not, offer every part of yourself to God. God offer all yourself to God and say, God, I don't even mean it right now. I know that sounds horrible, but it works. Say God, I want to mean it. Can you get me to the place where I want to mean it? I'm offering all of myself and you know, I'm holding this back God. 'cause I can't lie to you. I can feel myself holding it back and I don't even know how to get to the point to give it to you, but I'm offering it all to you.

I trust your grace. Do what it takes to get me to that place. Oh, that one hurt, didn't it? That's a tough one. Pray and ask God to receive your sacrifice. There's prayer involved into here. When you sacrifice, you're asking God, receive your sacrifice. I'm not asking you to be perfect. Devil wants now that to go into this like mental thing in your mind, this heart thing where you're never gonna make a sacrifice 'cause you're so terrified you're gonna make a mistake.

Just offer it to God and ask God to make a change. And then to, to accept. Receive your sacrifice. And I say the final thing at the end here, go to the final verse of this passage. It's kind of a hard verse. Verse 40. And Elijah said to them, seize the prophets of Baal. Not let one of them escape. And they seize them. And Elijah brought them to the brook of Kaan and he slaughtered 'em there. I don't live in Elijah's time.

I'm not making a moral judgment on the slaughtering of prophets. But I am saying that each of us has prophets of bail, things in our life representatives, things in our life that we need to seize, take to kahan these, these, these habits, these different things that hold us back and put those things to death in your life. Seize the prophets. One of the best ways to get to the place where you're giving God better sacrifices is by seizing the metaphoric prophets in your life and removing them.

That's the end of this series on Elijah. And I hope it is enc. It's been incredibly encouraging to me. I've preached it out. I've been preaching to myself the whole time. None of y'all could have shown up and I would've been blessed because the word of God, I could have just preach it. And in this word, this is a powerful word. We are moving into the epistles for the next two weeks. Um, pastor Harry and Pastor Joshua will be preaching two incredible sermons, uh, in the book of James.

We're back into that now that we have some business to do. If you would stand, we'll have communion together. And in that communion, give God those things in your heart. Even if you don't feel it, say, God, you know where I am. You know, I'm 50% right now. I'm gonna give it to you. Now is a moment. Amazing word. No thanks Adam. No, it's not on. Okay. Amazing word, pastor Adam. So good to be with y'all. Um, actually you can sit now.

Um, we're gonna be doing communion as God. So everybody sit. Let me talking a little bit. Uh, this is a family meal. If you've put your personal faith in the Lord Jesus, this is, this is your meal. If you haven't put your faith in the Lord Jesus' death, his sacrifice because he loves you so much, then we'd ask you to come up and receive prayer. Um, Adam was talking about the fire. And part of the fire that continues to fuel his people is when we meet together, we take communion.

What is communion? Jesus says on the night of his arrest, he took bread. And after giving thanks to God, he broke it and he gave it to his disciples saying, take and eat. This is my body given for you. Do this and remembers me. Part of how you get fired to keep going is remembering that Jesus body out of love, was broken for you. And he has us take it together as a visible symbol that he loves you so much, he died and was broken in your place.

And the same way he took the cup saying, this cup is the new covenant sealed in my bloodshed for you, for the forgiveness of sins. And whenever you drink it, do this in remembrance of me. Every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the saving death of the risen Lord until he comes. Before time began, before the world began, the Son said, I will come in to save my children. I will live in their place. I will die in their place.

I'll be broken in their place so they won't be broken and they don't have to die. Do you have faith in that beautiful loving God? And if you do, this meal is to recenter you that he loves you. Some administration, people on this side are gonna come up. They're gonna take the drape juice and the bread. They're gonna go back, sit down, examine yourself, pray. And then I'll read the Lord's words and we'll take it together as a corporate one.

So let us rise now and come up and take communion Indeed and all to the heart. And Jesus Painted incomplete. Jesus died my soul all to him. Um, I think you know this, but just want to say it out loud. Our God is like no other God. For God so loved the world, he gave his only begotten son that whoever shall believe in him shall not perish, but have eternal life. Do you believe? Do you believe? And do you receive Jesus?

On the night of his arrest, he took bread and gave thanks to God and he broke it. And he gave his disciples saying, take and eat. This is my body. Do this. And remember it's me. Let us eat together. And in the same way he took the cup, it's the new covenant sealed in my blood Shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. If you've put your faith in him, your sins are forgiven. Whenever you drink it, do this. And Reem it's me.
