My name is Zach I'm an active duty member in the Marines And I go to church here as well So I worship through the church By serving on the golf cart team I drive the Jerusalem Cruiser, so maybe you've seen me there And I also participate in Joe's small group 242 Who I see some 242 people here as well But today I'm going to be reading A scripture from Acts 16 Verses 11 through 15 Let's dive in From Troas we put out to sea and sailed straight for Samothrace And the next day we went to Neapolis From there we traveled to Philippi A Roman colony in the leading city of that district of Macedonia And we stayed there several days On the Sabbath we went outside the city gate to the river Where we expected to find a place of prayer We sat down and began to speak to the women who had gathered there One of those listening was a woman from the city of Thyatira Named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth She was a worshiper of God The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul's message And when she and the members of her household were baptized She invited us to her home If you consider me a believer in the Lord, she said Come and stay at my house And she persuaded us This is the word of the Lord Well my goodness, praises, let me tell you the news My head's been wet with the midnight dew I've been down on bended knee Talking to the man from Galilee He spoke to me with a voice so sweet I thought I heard the shuffle of angels' feet He called my name and my heart stood still When he said, John, go do my will Go tell that long-tongued liar Go tell that long-tongued liar I love that He's a liar And uh, have you got me on here?
Is my honor? No? Well hang on, one second See, this is not the medium Because you need to hit the arm button There we go All the way All right, let's go There we go All right, got thumbs up from the back there Good job Let me pray Get this started After that media technology issue on my part Lord Jesus, I want to thank you for your word I want to thank you for your word I want to thank you for the gospel of Jesus Christ We just love you, Lord Be with us today as we dive into this passage And we seek to see how it impacts our lives And brings gospel impact In the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit Amen Amen We're in the gospel series And uh, we've been talking the first three weeks Uh, four weeks of the gospel series About theology Been talking about the way, the truth, and the life And why it matters to have a way You can't start with a truth Because if you start in truth You've already reached the destination And we don't live in a perfect world So the way, the truth, and the life matters We've been talking about the way As being faith and things of that nature We're pivoting now For the second half of the gospel series To talk about delivery How do we deliver the goods?
And we said a couple weeks ago That you can't deliver what you don't have Right now in America You've heard a lot about supply issues You remember the toilet paper barren shelves I don't know why we all had to go do that But nonetheless, it became a hot commodity And uh, there was barren shelves I want to say when it comes to the gospel We don't have a supply issue There's plenty of gospel to go around What we have is a supply chain issue We have a problem with people Understanding what the supply is They don't understand the product They don't understand the gospel This week, my daughter and I were I got her a book on the charts Theological charts Because she wanted to go over those And understand the end times And creation and all these things So we're going over that together Because she runs the faith club And she says I'm tired of kids coming up to me And asking me questions Since I run the faith club And I have no answers for my faith So that's getting embarrassing And so she said let's go understand the product If you're going to be a distributor And that's what you are You're a distributor You need to understand the product And number two You got to get it to shelf If you don't get the product to shelf It is not going to be there And available for the people Who God is opening their heart In this passage It says that Lydia's heart was opened I want to give you a statement That I created this morning Not in your notes But it's this The least effectual gospel Is an unintentional gospel I'm not saying it's not effective God can You can walk by somebody And smile And God can open up a conversation And that happens sometimes It's kind of like looking for a job By never looking for a job You're going to find more jobs If you put your application out Right?
And so We don't have a supply issue We have a supply chain issue And the least effective gospel The least effectual gospel I mean the story The good news We know that that means good news Is an unintentional gospel In this passage We have Paul being very intentional With his supply And he has a supply of the good news Do you know That if you follow Jesus We are meant to tap into To go to the warehouse of God's kingdom To go to the throne of God itself And to harvest our supply of joy Peace Goodness We will awake the dawn It said Dawn is in creation It's been here forever But it says that you As a human being Can awake the dawn That you begin to praise Before the sun comes up And begins to praise God itself Because creation Does praise God And so the least effective gospel The least effectual gospel Is an unintentional gospel So I guess the first question is Are you supplying the shelves?
And is your gospel intentional? Or is it unintentional? I know Paul told me recently A bunch of the 2535s Go down to a local cafe Here in the morning And they've been effectively Eating there And talking about Jesus And the owner of the cafe Made a decision To follow Jesus After two or three years Of going there We heard that Yeah At the men's night So that's That's an effective On purpose gospel In Mark 16 15 Jesus says this And it's not a suggestion Preaching the gospel Sharing the gospel It doesn't mean You're going to be A street preacher In England You know Preaching Yelling on the streets There's different ways To shine the light Some of you Might be a dim Like one of those Like old fashioned bulbs That are super cool now And you give a cool Radiant yellow light That everyone likes Maybe that's you Maybe you're a spotlight You're like My mom's a spotlight She's like What you want to know About Jesus?
You know Eyes are peeling back You know Mark 16 15 And Jesus He said unto them Go into all the world And proclaim the gospel To the whole of creation That's the English Standard version It's a great version If you don't English Standard version It's a great version Of the Bible Order it They've decided No longer to update it So they're not updating Anything anymore They've kept it as it is It's a great gospel It's a great translation Let me read that again And he said to them Go into all the world And proclaim the gospel To who?
To the whole of creation That I'm not just Proclaiming it to human beings I'm proclaiming it To the cosmos Francis of Assisi Would And I don't really suggest this But he would preach To the birds It would say He would just go out And preach the word of God Because it's effective Wherever it is Obviously the human heart Is the landing spot For it But are you preaching And so also When it comes to creation care Then one of the ways We preach the gospel Is caring for creation Just because Maybe somebody Has grabbed onto The creation care narrative In a different way Than you like You don't abandon Creation care So we're preaching The gospel Are you preaching The gospel?
It's not a suggestion By Jesus It's a command There's a difference And are you being Intentional? Martin Lloyd Jones Had a great quote A fantastic quote The glory of the gospel Is that when the church Is absolutely different From the world She invariably Attracts it Now that's counterintuitive Right? It is this thought That we need to be more We need to be more like the world We need to Kind of resemble the world We got to kind of fool them With what we wear And how we talk And the things that we do We kind of got to fool them And once we get them in We fool them with One trick or another Then we're going to Spring it on them No You know Yesterday I was Talking to my daughter And she was talking about Drug use and sexuality And asking me questions about it And she goes It just seems so normal I said no That's not normal I said what you are doing Is normal That's the way God Created you What you are doing Is normal And what Satan wants to do Is normalize things He wants to make things That are abnormal Normal The human condition Is meant to live The way that you are Trying to live And when you live that way It attracts people Why?
Why do so many people I said Lucy Come up to you And ask you questions About the way you live your life And your faith Why do they ask you? And she's not even out there Like blaring it Like Faith Club You got to like Show up and go into a room You get some free donuts So that's good Thank you Harry I see you Giving out those donuts Over there But Martin Lloyd-Jones says The glory of the gospel Is that when the church Is absolutely different From the world We're different We're different The way we do marriage We're different The way we do dating We're different The way we do You know Love and grace And mercy And forgiveness In a world That preaches Justice, justice, justice Which we believe God is a God of justice There is no message Of forgiveness One of the things You will see Is we want justice But we don't want forgiveness Because forgiveness Is an end game Right?
Not that there aren't Consequences But forgiveness Is an end game And some people Just don't want an end game They want to continue To do what they're doing The gospel The glory of the gospel The glory of the gospel Is that when the church Is absolutely different From the world She invariably attracts it Is anyone being attracted To the gospel That you share Or are your shelves barren?
Are you even Are you even going to the Do you know how to go To the warehouse? Do you even know The product that you have? This is the supply chain issue That we need to fix As believers We have an incredible gospel And a gospel That changes the world That saves lives That stops suicides That brings families together That turns the hearts Of the children To their parents And turns the hearts Of the parents To their children We have a gospel That saves the world That fixes families That changes That takes away depression That takes away anxiety We have a gospel That has power Are you using it And where are you Being intentional?
Go to verse 12 11 and 12 Paul was intentional That's the main point today Paul was intentional With where he took the gospel Paul was Let me say it again Paul put your name there Vinny Vinny yesterday Sat with me yesterday With a bunch of basketball girls And just started making conversation Talking Saying hey I work in the youth group Blah blah blah Bunch of Lucy's friends Paul was intentional Put your name there Vinny Sue You know Harry Whatever your name is Was intentional With where they took the gospel Are you being intentional?
Verse 11 and 12 From Troas We put out to sea And sailed straight For Samothrace Circle straight Circle straight There was a reed Straight to it The Bible doesn't mince words I don't think God puts extra words In the scripture That verb is actually In the Greek In the original Greek So the translation Sometimes there's issues He sailed straight To Samothrace Point is Where are you sailing Straight to?
Samothrace And the next day We went on To Neapolis That's a seaport village In south of Philippi Philippi would become One of the major churches For the spreading of the gospel In all of Europe This is Paul's Second missionary journey We'll be getting back To Paul's second missionary journey This summer When we did Journey one last year We're doing journey two This summer From there We traveled to Philippi A Roman colony And a leading city Of that district Of Macedonia And we stayed there For several days This is a Place in the world That was unreached By the gospel Paul Understood He had gone to the source He had filled himself With a knowledge Of the gospel And now he was taking it From the Jews Who had rejected it Many of the Jews Paul was a Jew He was also a Roman citizen But he was called To preach to the Gentile And so Paul goes To the Gentile And he goes to Europe This is the first time Ever That we know of That the gospel Of Jesus Christ Made it onto European soil Okay He sails straight To Samothrace Where is Samothrace?
Samothrace Is a little island Off of the coast Of Turkey And there There is a statue Which is my I won't say It's in my top five Favorite statues Of all time It is called It's called The winged victory Of Samothrace Now If you have been To the Louvre And you have gone up The main staircase At the Louvre There you will see The winged victory Of Samothrace That is the goddess Nike It means victory And it was in this place The valley Or the hall Of the gods That was on the island At Samothrace This was from 200 years Before Christ It is gorgeous If you get a chance To ever look at that picture And blow up the wings And look at How you can make the wings Look so alive It is one of the masterpieces Of antiquity But more than that It showed about a society That believed their victory Came from the goddess Nike You want to know What Nike means?
Nike is the goddess Of victory So it's the goddess Of war and victory Athena You have Athena And I'm getting all over the place But nonetheless A goddess of victory And so it is called The winged victory And this is a people Who he was going to Who did not find their victory In Jesus Christ and God And he was bringing that From there It says that he sailed To Neapolis Was there a sea town?
Sea towns are Are notorious For being a little swarthy If you know what I mean So it wasn't like He wanted to go To all the nice places Paul Regularly Sailed Into the teeth Of the dragon He sailed Into the lair Of the dragon He was not afraid To go to places That would put him Perhaps at peril He actually has a whole chapter Where he speaks about How many times He was at peril And then from there We travel to Philippi Now Philippi You've heard of the book Of Philippians How did the book Of Philippians Come about?
It's because there was A church there That was planted In Roman's colony Because of this trip And also because Of one person Lydia Who we saw In the passage Who became a follower Of Jesus Christ With his intentional gospel He went straight To a place And when he was there Going through his As you'll see in a moment His Basically it was a ritual Of prayer And the life That he would live He ran into some women And God opened the heart Of one of these women Named Lydia Who would actually Follow Jesus But Philippi was interesting There's a map here Of this area in Turkey Now you will see there If you see on this map Right here Philippi was the place In 43 AD Excuse me 43 BC Where Cassius and Brutus Fled to With their armies 19 legions That's a lot of legions After the plot To kill Julius Caesar So they bounced Out of Rome Ran away Went up over the top Of Rome And took their entire Army to Philippi When they were there Mark Anthony Because they were part Of a thing called The Triumvirate It was three generals Three generals And there was a break In the Triumvirate And so Mark Anthony And Octavian Who were related Mark Anthony Ends up with Cleopatra Who I also found out Was who had a relationship With Julius Caesar I did not know that They went And they traveled To go to war Against Brutus And Cassius This was right On the outskirts Of Philippi Why it's important Is because they understood This to be a very Influential city It was a supply route One of the things You realize On the supply routes In the places Of influence In the places Of power That often times Morality Trickles downstream From the centralized Places of power And so Paul On a regular basis Would go straight To the people In power To the places In power But as we see In a moment He also went To those That weren't Not in power He went to The water's edge And he began To speak to women We'll talk about That in a moment And share the gospel With women Which was a cultural Bound that he broke But in this place There's some marshes It's actually A really cool battle You can look at it On Wikipedia They decided That those marshes There at the bottom Cassius and Brutus Thought you could never Go through those marshes Well Mark Anthony He's like We're going to go Through the marshes So they go through The marshes It's a really cool battle And then Cassius Ends up killing himself Because the battle Wasn't going well Brutus gets away And I won't let you Finish the story Of Roman history From there But a really important city This happened Now this is about 80, 70 to 80 years Before Paul gets there But it's an incredibly Important city Paul knows where he's going Let me ask this Do you know Where you're going?
Do you know The people you're reaching? Are you going Straight there? Are you going Intentionally there? And do you have Any product to deliver? Or do you have An empty van To show up And not stock any shelves With God's love His peace His mercy And the good news Remember the gospel Means good news Not condemnation And judgment Jesus even said I didn't come to judge I was reading today In Romans This morning Where it says That the world's Already under judgment You don't need To judge the world The world's already Under judgment You don't need To judge the world What you need to say Is God has a life preserver God has meaning God has hope And I also think As I said a few weeks ago That the gospel Needs to transform These days From talking about Sin with people You do need to get to sin Because people Don't believe in sin You cannot tell something You need to be rescued From sin When they don't believe In sin What I think We need to start with Is meaning Because everyone Is looking For definition And meaning And what we're finding Is people Are feeling Meaningless And the gospel Gives meaning So when you share One of the things That you can share with Is God has given me meaning He can give you meaning And let you know Why you exist I talked about the 1980 band The meat puppets It just meant There's this Philosophical concept That you know We're just You know If there's no God If there's no creation We're just a piece of meat Now they stole the name From the philosophical concept But you're just You're just flesh It's floating around In the universe And just a random Sequence of events And you mean nothing And you will disappear That's not the gospel And that's actually Not very good news The good news Is that you do have meaning That you do matter And that you are not A meat puppet And so If you want to go to Spotify You can listen to that band But you don't have to Nonetheless From Troas We put out to sea Sailed straight for Samothrace And the next day We went on to Neapolis From there We traveled to Philippi A Roman colony In the leading The leading Circle Leading The leading City Of the district Of Macedonia Now we know that Macedonia At one point Would take an offering There would be a huge Earthquake there It would destroy The entire nation It would be destroyed Through civil wars They were very poor But when Jerusalem Needed an offering Where did Paul go?
They went to Macedonia Remember that? Took an offering From the Macedonian believers This ends up being An incredibly powerful church This incredibly powerful church And actually Rome And Europe Is transformed Because of Paul's decision To go to that place So the first point Is where are you going? Are you going Straight anywhere? Or have you just been Living an intentional gospel?
An unintentional gospel? I will I don't know if I can assure you But I would almost assure you That the things that you want Are not You don't go after them Unintentionally I don't think The things that you want You all have things you want It could be some golf clubs I don't know Whatever it is But you don't go after them Unintentionally If you're going to have A great marriage It does not happen Unintentionally If you're going to have A great relationship With your children It doesn't happen Unintentionally It happens Intentionally And God is a God Of intentionality And Paul shared the gospel With intentionality Now Next question is Who are you reaching?
Who are you reaching? Verse 13 On the Sabbath We went outside To the city gate So where did he go? He went outside The city gate Because the gospel Was to all people To the river Where we expected To find a place Of prayer Now I want you To circle A place of prayer We sat down And began to speak To the women Taboo First century Taboo Less taboo In Rome Less taboo In Rome For sure There was more women Of aristocracy In Rome And in Roman This was in Turkey But there was Women had more Of a place Than they did In Jewish society But still taboo And still what most people Men wouldn't often do To start trying To gain power In an area They would go To the generals They would go To the equestrians Which was a level Of civil society That if you owned a horse You were called An equestrian Had to be rich To own a horse So you would go To those type of people But what does Paul do?
Paul goes to the river Because the gospel Is for everyone And Paul is willing To go anywhere He's willing To be a janitor For Jesus You see So many people Just especially pastors In my field They just want A big stage They always want To pastor people They don't know You know what I mean? They want to write a book So they can pastor people All around the world But yet not have a heart For the place That they actually live Because it's inconvenient If you actually call me On my day off It's inconvenient And if you're in New York You can buy my book And unless Paul wasn't like that Paul was willing To have his life Be inconvenienced For the gospel And he wasn't looking For power We sat down And began to speak To the women Who had gathered there Verse 13 I'm going to keep reading Verse 14 One of those listening So there was many One of those listening Everyone's listening Someone's always listening Be careful what you say One of those That was listening Was a woman From the city of Thyatira Named Lydia A dealer in purple cloth You had to be rich To be a dealer In purple cloth Because those dyes Many of them Especially purple Came from India You couldn't get them Unless you went to India So she was dealing Through the trade routes And it was a big business To have dye That would stay And set In the robes And so that was important That's why kings Had purple robes Because it was really Expensive to have that One of those listening Was a woman And it says She was a what?
A worshiper of God Now she was worshipping God In Romans chapter 1 and 2 It talks about people Who don't know Who Jesus is But they still Are following God With their conscience How was she A worshiper of God? I don't know But she didn't know Who Jesus was It doesn't say That she was a Jew Right here But she was following The true God somehow She knew something about it And I'm sure That through the Verbal communication There had been Discussions about A true and a real God She was following him But it says Then the Lord Opened her heart To respond to Paul's message If you don't have a message God will never be able To open up someone's heart To your message Gospel speaks about The Bible speaks about It says And if no one Preaches to them How will they hear?
Well I don't want To offend somebody Paul wasn't worried About offending people He didn't go out Of his way To offend people But even speaking To women here Would be offensive To some And he was willing To do whatever it took Paul's gospel Was taken to all Where are you Taking your gospel? First thing I wrote What was interesting This is a little bit Of a side note It says And we stayed there Several days On the Sabbath On the Sabbath That's intentional An intentional day We went outside The city gate Where we expected To find a place Of prayer Now I don't know Why they expected To find a place Of prayer But let me say He was looking To go pray And if you were Going to share The gospel It needs to be Imbued with prayer If you want To supercharge Your life If you want To supercharge The gospel You need to be Praying over The places That you have Intentionally decided To go and share The gospel Where you have Intentionally decided My daughter's Basketball coach Is here today I won't Embarrass him By calling him out But I was down We were looking For a private coach Just one day a week A little bit of Lessons on the side And I was down At the park And I saw This young man And he was Just doing some Lessons with somebody And he had his Game together He looked good Looked really encouraging So I rolled up on him I said hey do you do Basketball He says yeah I coach basketball And this I said my daughter's Looking for a coach And on his Pants he had Something that said Something to the Effect of like You know One basketball Or something under God And I said And I could tell By the way I could just tell Christians when I meet Them Believers Because they're Just different I ask people All the time I could tell There's a gal At the Pete's Coffee You can just see Them in their eyes You know what I mean Especially when they're Trying I said do you follow Jesus He goes absolutely I want a bible study And I'm like good You're our man So let's try it out Next Friday So but I gotta say My man Xavier I wasn't gonna say His name If you see a man Named Xavier You meet him You'll know who he is Xavier was down there I'm not calling him out But if you need A private basketball coach Xavier's a man Nonetheless Especially you online Xavier was intentional You're not wearing Your pants That say One basketball nation Under God Or something like You're not He's being intentional But he's not out there With like hey I'm a Christian Basketball coach You know what I'm saying He's being intentional Because he knows Where he's going And he knows Who he's going to And he has a purpose And a mission I'm the same way Right now Like I For this The place I am Intentionally trying to go Right now Is the school I've been going to My daughter's schools Public schools I believe In the public school system Can be changed For God's grace And mercy And we're doing A lot of things To do that This week I was voted in To be on the foundation At La Jolla High School Yeah right Which is cool What does the foundation do?
We raise money Our church And us And the people we gathered Raised more money For La Jolla High School sports Than anyone else I was told Right So make yourself useful You want to know Why they vote you On the board? Because you raised some money Because you're helpful You're useful I didn't show up down there And say hey We just Man I want to get These new Bibles To all the students No No I didn't do that I just showed up And said hey How can we help?
And now I'm super excited To be a part of that We're doing things Because I'm intentionally Going to them And I'm intentionally Going to love that team I love My daughter's teammates I love her She's on a club team Right now We took them out We went out to Rubio's Yesterday We all sat around And talked I can't believe What girls are talking About in front of me I'm like Carol's I'm not one of the girls Okay We Ah yeah Ah da da da Don't even know about that In the car driving They talk about crazy But I guess I'm in I'm one of the girls They know they're loved They know they're loved We made my You know Lucy and I We made bags We made bags For all the girls At Christmas We put socks in there Cost money to do things Like that You know Where are you going I gave Xavier as an example Where are you going Where are you making A difference We have a supply chain issue We have got to get out there We found out that 30% of our people Come to our church Because of eyesight They see the church When they come by We push the cafe out there On a reason For a reason They see it 30% of our people Of the 25 people That are coming In our survey Come because of eyesight 30% of our people Come because of the website They see the website It's got to be good It's got to be updated And 30% of our people Come because of invite 30% from invite Man I'd love to see That be 80% Invite We have a supply chain issue And so we see right here On Sabbath He went outside And Paul's gospel Was imbued with prayer He was praying He was praying For the people That he was going to Praying for the school Praying for the players By name Resourcing the players By name Where Who are your players Where is your school Where is the place That you are intentionally going Are all of your thoughts Completely centered upon you And where you're going I want to say One of the One of the most effective ways To be unhappy Is think about yourself a lot I'm serious One of the One of the The best ways to be unhappy Is to think about yourself And your trajectory And what you want And all the That's one of the What's one of the The most effective things You can do to be miserable Is think about yourself All the time Constantly navel gazing On where you're going And upset Coming in for a landing Paul also crossed Cultural norms By reaching out To the working women At the water's edge The gospel then Ended up It would be 500 years before Rome fell Rome falls Arguably in 476 It was a thousand year empire Incredible Rome a thousand year empire I mean The United States Has been around what 500 A thousand Excuse me 250 A thousand year empire It would fall 500 years later But Rome Because he went there Would become One of the And Europe Would become One of the most Proselytizing Effective nations And continents In history For sharing the gospel And it started With this One guy getting on a boat And saying I'm going straight there One guy willing To be able to Cross cultural boundaries No matter what Anybody would say To reach out to Whoever he could reach out to Whoever wanted to hear And that woman Interestingly enough The first convert To Christianity In all of Europe Was a woman Do you get this Like whole woman thing In the Bible Like Jesus When he raises from the dead The first people he talks to Was women Like the women Like the first time Paul goes It's a female convert She becomes the anchor She invites them To her house To stay She becomes the anchor Of the Philippian church This woman Now others come along This woman And using her business Using her resources She's like I'm all in Boom She took all of her Businesses and everything And pushed it into Following the ministry And helping plant a church In Philippi Which would become One of the most Influential churches In all of Europe And history is still Affected by it today Where are you going Who are you going to We have a supply chain issue You never know To inconvenience yourself To share the gospel You never know Go somewhere And talk to someone You never know What will lead Let's fill the shells With God's love Mercy and hope Amen Stand if you would Want to bless you today If you need prayer Then we have people Who are going to come Pray for you up the front And they have little name tags And come be prayed for Come to the front If you need to know About our church You want to find out How to get involved How to get connected Go to the next steps table We want to get Get involved You heard people up here All day I got involved I'm doing this I'm doing that Zach was like I'm part of this I'm part of that Come get involved Get involved Be a part of the family And number two If you want a great cup of coffee That's all you want Go get a free one Outside of the cafe I'm going to bless you Right now Extend your hands If you would Jesus we bless your people We want more Lord some of us Just need to say God I need to I need to tap back Into the supply I need to get back To the Costco Of God's love Fill up Can't leave there Without spending A thousand bucks Let's go God We just bless these people Lord They want to go to the warehouse And they want to fill up And give them a desire To fill up For more of you More worship More prayer To wake the dawn To walk the beach To pray To imbue Their gospel With prayer Bless them with prayer Give them a place In their mind right now Where they're supposed to go Give them the people Who they're supposed to go to Give them the message Of the gospel And the willingness To not care what anybody thinks To share God's love God we bless you And I pray God That you would remove Their thoughts from them That you would allow them To think of themselves less And think of others And you more And that this place Would change the world And bless it In the name of the Father Son and the Holy Spirit Amen
