You just heard it there a second ago. We are on to the second to the last. The penultimate is what they would call it. Sermon, before we get to the final sermon, Pastor Joshua, I think he told you, is going to finish up for us next week, which I'm super excited about. I'm heading off to England to meet with some missions partners and then have 10 days of Lenten retreat, which is great, looking at the ocean and sitting there and trying to hear from Jesus.

So I'm excited about that. I will be meeting with Tim, the elder at our sister church over there, doing a one-hour Vimeo on Celtic Christianity and how to kind of work that in. So that'll be online. We're going to be doing that live, I think, from Whitby, which is one of the old monasteries over there and kind of doing that. So we're coming to a place, kind of to the end of the trajectory of Abraham.

Abraham is going to pass away in the next iteration of this sermon series. Beforehand, he has a massive decision to make, and that decision will fulfill the promise, the promise that God has put before him. And you would think, right, when you have to fulfill one of the biggest elements of the biggest promise of your life, the ultimate promise of your life, you would do the job yourself.

But for some reason, Abraham is sending a trusted servant. We know that he's sending the servant out of obedience because God said, I'm going to take you from the land and you're not going back there, but I also don't want you getting a wife from the Canaanites where you're at. So he's a little bit between a rock and a hard place. And he has to send somebody who is not of his line.

So we know that this servant is not of his line because he has taken his family and removed him, and no one from his family is going back to that place. It's a good word for some of us who look at the former land and think, do I want to go back? And so Abraham takes this servant, and the servant, as we know last week, questioned him. It gave him an opportunity to kind of go back, and the servant says, well, what if this happens?

Maybe we should do, you know, a little, you know, a different idea. And Abraham's, no, we will not do that. We will do it this way. And so he sends him back, and he sends this servant. And when I started getting ready for this message, I thought it was going to take me somewhere else from where we are, the destination where we actually landed. And God began to open up the importance of his trusted servants, and them being surrounded by people that you can trust who see themselves as servants, who don't see themselves as kings, maybe in their spiritual authority.

They are kings and children of the king, and we have that. So there's a dichotomy, right? But in the way that we act in the world, we act as servants. And this servant has so many amazing qualities that you see that we also see in the life of Jesus, who saw himself as a servant. I put in the notes, it's, the title, Servanthood is Not a Side Hustle.

We tend to look at servanthood as a side hustle. I will be a servant when I have time to be a servant, and then I will applaud myself for being a servant because I took some time to be a servant. It's not a side hustle. It is a core identity to followers of Jesus. I put that Jesus said in Mark 10, 45, and Jesus spoke a lot about himself, but one of the core metaphors that Jesus had was of being a servant.

In Mark 10, 45, it says, for even the Son of Man, that's Jesus, did not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many. To serve. And the ultimate service that he did was to die on the cross so that his blood might set us free. I wrote this as I was thinking about this idea of servanthood, and there's a definition I got online, and there's a definition that I wrote.

I wanted to share them both. This is the one that I wrote. It says, in the end, God's people will not be measured upon their acquisitions, but rather their dissolution, not on what they tried to get, but instead on what they were willing to give away. We live in a culture that tells you to get, get more of this, get more respect there, get, get, get.

And servanthood is completely underrated. Let me assure you, when Jesus comes back, while some kings might be part of the servant class that he calls, that serve him, Jesus isn't coming looking for kings. Jesus is coming looking for servants. And he says that over and over again in the New Testament. And so this week, I really had to ask myself, do I see myself as a servant?

Do I value the role of the servant? And do I understand that that is what Christ is calling me to be? And so in this passage, as we come to the end of Abraham's life, we see Abraham who has become a servant of God. Even King David is called God's servant. And as I was reading through the different passages on servanthood, and in the Old Testament, there's 610 verses that use the word servant.

In the New Testament, 157. And the lion's share of those are in the gospel of Luke. As you look, it is the servant's gospel. And so we see that. And I guess the question is, are you being a servant? Do you want to be a servant? When you switch that mentality in your mind, it'll change the way you live. It'll change the way you drive. It'll change the way you stand in line for your coffee.

It'll change the way you speak to your wife. It'll change the way you speak to your children. It'll change everything. And it'll change it for the better. And so what I want to call you to at the beginning is to be, you know, I would say children of the king in our spiritual authority, but servants as we walk on earth. And to retake that mantle of servanthood.

Now here's the definition I saw. A servant of God is someone who dedicates their life to fulfilling the will of God. I love that. Dedicates their life to fulfilling their own will. No, the will of God. Serving others with humility, compassion, love, prioritizing spiritual values over worldly pursuits. I want to read that again. If that didn't slap you in the face, it did me.

Let me just say it again. Prioritizing spiritual values over worldly pursuits. They seek to follow God's teaching, spread his message, and act as instruments of his grace and mercy in the world. They are walking around as servants with the treasures of God, laden in the treasures of God, looking where they can dispense the treasures of God, where they can give grace, where they can give mercy, where they can give service, where they can give encouragement, where they can give help at the bidding of Jesus Christ, saying, here I am, Lord, send me.

That's the servant. That is so far from where I often live. That place on the map is somewhere that I don't, I feel like I live there in moments upon my decision. True servants aren't living according to their own volition. True servants are living according to the pleasure of the master. And they follow the master no matter where the master calls them to go.

I had a few things that I wrote about what you see in this passage and what are the benefits of being a servant and the nature of a servant. And you can go as we check through these and see them. Let's go to verse 10. Servants are supplied. I love that. Just write, you know, write it down. You can circle that word supplied. Verse 10. Then the servant left and taking with him 10 of his master's camels loaded.

Loaded. I don't know what the Hebrew word for loaded is, but I want to learn it. Loaded with all kinds of good things from his master. Then the servant left, taking with him 10 of his master's camels loaded with all kinds of good things from his master. What I love is that servants aren't impoverished. There's a sense that the servants, the servants of the good master, are just impoverished.

They're living in the servants' quarters. They don't have much to their name. But what you see here and what you saw in the life of Joseph, we're going to get to Joseph soon. What you see in the life of Joseph, as we go through the Genesis series, is he was a servant who was twice, once for Potiphar and once for the Pharaoh himself, put in charge of everything until he had all of Egypt.

Joseph was a servant who was not impoverished. Servant mentality, servant spirituality does not mean you will be impoverished. He was loaded with a few good things. No. With every kind of good thing, as we see that there, let's read it again. With all kinds of good things from his master. Why? Because his master, as we saw last week, had become very old, and God had blessed him in every way.

Satan wants you to think that if you live a life of a servant, that you will just live this impoverished life. The life of the servant is not impoverished. It is a life that is filled with all kinds of good things. And not just, I'm not just talking material things. I don't think God has a problem with material things, you know. He likes cool pocket watches that somebody gives you.

Like, you know, that's cool, right? I like it. But if somebody wants it, you can have it. You know, you want it after the service, I'll give it to you. I don't care. But he doesn't care, you know. God doesn't mind giving you fun stuff like that. So it's not that. He wants to fill you with love. He wants to fill you with mercy. He wants to fill you with kindness.

He wants to fill you with the things that really matter. I listened to an article, a podcast this week, and they were talking about the statistics of people who are married with families and their happiness. The good things that come to them. Everything from their physical lives to their emotional wellness to their health to their finances. It did say that married men have ten times the amount of wealth that single men have.

Ten times it said. I had to go back and listen to it twice, ten times. I was like, you know, thank you, wives. I want to say thank you for that. The women are like, yeah, of course they do because of us. God wants to bless you when we do things his way. And he wants to fulfill you. And so the world will tell you, hey, just be, you know, whatever.

Be that single guy. You know, there's 60% less marriage than from the 1970s, it said in this podcast. But happiness has gone down. But marital happiness is actually for people who have been married and stayed married has gone up. And so I began to listen to that. And I realized that God wants to fill you with every kind of good things when we do things his way.

And so servants are supplied. And I really like that. And see yourself as supplied. I love that they're trustworthy. He said to his senior servant. This is Abraham now. He said to his senior servant in his household, the one in charge of all that he had. I underlined all that he had. Put your hand under my thigh. And I want you to swear with the Lord, the God of heaven, the God, you will not get a wife from the daughters of the Canaanites among who I live.

But will go to my country and my own relatives and get a wife for my son, Isaac. I love that he put him in charge of all that he had. Scripture is very clear that you will judge angels. That God will, we will judge the world with Christ, the scripture says. He has authority over all things. And he shares his toys. That when you are a servant of God, you will be with him as him as your master over you in charge of all things.

That you will know, have all knowledge, all power, all authority. The scripture speaks about all. It speaks about full measures of that as a servant. The enemy wants you to think that servants don't have those type of things. And if you want to go after things yourself, then you can have the measure that comes with what you can get on your own.

But God says here that he wants to give you everything that he is in charge of. And then he says, put your hand under my thigh. People wonder what does that mean. In Old Testament, in old times, they would do things that were symbolic. So they would have your hand put near your loins and they would say, hey, I'm not going to do this. Okay, so you're not going to have me ask you to do this, anyone.

But you would put your hand next to the loin and they would make a vow in that way under his leg to show that this vow has to do with posterity. It has to do with children coming from your loins. And so it was a physical symbol of an invisible grace and a promise and a vow. And so that's why you see that happening. But Abraham trusted him. And I love this because God wants to trust us with his things.

I mean, how ridiculous is it that the God of the universe would trust us with his stuff? But he does. I hear people say, oh, I've been hurt by the church. Why? Why? Because God trusts imperfect people with his stuff in hopes that he might collaborate with us to bring his entire kingdom. So they're trustworthy. Servants are supplied. They're trustworthy.

I love that they're willing. Go to verse 10b. Then he set out for Aram Naharim and made his way to the town of Nahor. I'm sure this servant had other things he could have done that day. I'm sure there's other places he could have gone that day. But when the master called him to go, he went. Let me say that again. When the master called him to go, he went.

You know, so often I'm running my life on my plans and my schedules. And not even starting the day saying, Lord, here I am. Send me. Where can I serve you today? Because I have this plan that I want. As opposed to waiting and developing a listening and attentive, you know, spirit waiting for the Lord. And so we see that they're willing. But once again, they're supplied, trustworthy, willing, prayerful.

Now, we know that this is not part of his line or one of the Jewish people that is with him. You know, he's the original Israelite, Abraham, that was called. This person who he has brought in as a servant to serve him picked up a trait of his. And that trait was prayer. And it's interesting that he probably is from another nation. He probably has different gods or whatever.

But there's something in Abraham's life that turned his heart to that now this servant of Abraham prays to the same God in the same way that Abraham prays. I want to tell you parents, and I want to tell you people, prayer is passed down. Prayer is taught, but it's more caught. If your children see you praying, they will remember it. If you see grandma praying, you will remember it.

If your parents lay hands upon you at night or before you go somewhere, you will remember it. And if they don't, you will remember that too. You see, prayer is a blessing. And when they see you pray, it actually gets caught. And this servant became prayerful. I want to say servants are prayerful. It's interesting too, if you look at the servant, why should he pray?

He's got no reason to pray. If he's just seeing himself as, ah, this master of mine, you know, the wicked servant that Jesus speaks about. And there are servants that are wicked. If he just says, sir, he's sending me here. I got things I want to do. I got a pickleball game at six. I want to be too. Just a joke right there. Pickleball, the place where athletes go to die.

I'll never play. I will never play. I don't care what you say. I'll never go play some pickleball. Never. And get off the two courts about, just kidding, sorry, okay. Whole bunch of tennis courts. Go mess with the tennis players. Somebody says no. Okay, I got it. All right. Take it back. He's got something else that he's doing, right? He could go anywhere that he's going.

But yet, instead of being disgruntled, he begins to pray for the master's will. He's not even from his people. He has no reason to pray for those things. But he has been so changed by watching his master, by a relationship with his master, that he begins to care more about his master's things, that he will pray for them more than he cares about his own.

Go to verse 12. Then he prayed, Lord, God of my master Abraham. I love that. He knows who he's talking to. Lord, God of my master Abraham. Make me successful today and show kindness to my master Abraham. I love that. Prayer is passed down. Parents, pray. If you're at school, pray. People will remember. Pray in public. I want to encourage you all, pray in public.

Have some friends. If you at Starbucks, I'm not saying stand up and be an annoyance, but just say, hey, we're going to bow our heads right now. We're going to spend 10 minutes right now at this table. We're just going to pray. Just pray. We need to be visible in the world. Praying. And it says prayer is passed down. So I love that he's prayerful. Are you prayerful about your master's stuff?

And in your prayers, are we praying more for our stuff or our master's stuff? I've got to say, I'm probably 70-30 me. Just saying. 70-30 me. And we see that he is just praying for a success of what his master wants. Jesus, what do you want? I've been asking God what he wants in these things. What are you doing in our country? What do you want? What do you want for me?

What do you want for our church? We see that. I love in verse 14, they're expectant. There's a sense of expectation. When Pastor Joshua spoke at the Ash Wednesday service, he spoke about coming into Lent with an expectation. He said, God, I'm expecting you to move. I was expecting God to move on Thursday night in one of the final hurdles for our building.

And God moved. And thank you, all of you that were there. There was probably 40 or more of us that were there that showed up with skin in the game to sit there for two hours and just tell people how much that matters to them in the community. And they were expecting. I was expecting that God was going to move and God moved. I went last night to the Billy Graham event.

Or excuse me, the Franklin Graham event, but by the Billy Graham Association. They said about 700, 800 people probably went forward to make decisions for Jesus Christ. I was expectant. Are you expectant? Expectancy is a core value of faith. What are you expectant for? Or have you just lost expectation? See, if you're just trying to survive all the time, then we're never expectant.

You know, sometimes hope gets deferred for a while. But Jesus wants to come in and he wants to come alongside of us as we're expectant for him. In verse 14, it says he's expecting. He says, may it be. Now, this is an answer for his prayer. So he puts God out on the line a little bit, his prayer out on the line. He says, may it be that when I say to the young woman, please let your jar down, that you may have a drink, that this may happen.

And he says, God, I just pray that I meet this woman and that you give me a sign that I may know. Now, I'm not sure God always works that way, where you can say, God, it needs to be 2 plus 2 equals, you know, 4. And then I'll move forward. But this is Old Testament. And I like that he was expectant. And that's the point here. That when you pray, you pray for expectancy.

When we laid hands on my wife's stomach when she was first pregnant with Lily, we began to pray for her husband. And we began to pray that he'd be a godly man, that he would know Christ. And we began to pray. I remember praying, laying my hands on her stomach before we had any children and praying for Lily. We didn't know it was Lily at the time, that she would have a godly man.

And she's going to be married in July to Mason King. And he is a godly man. He is a man of God. They call that an M-O-G. Okay? You want to find. Somebody said there's a, I was talking to a young woman last night in the high school group. She said there's a difference between a Christian man and a man of God. And I said, okay, let's talk about that.

And the man of God is one that pursues and goes after it. And so there's an expectancy. And not every prayer, you know, sometimes we're waiting. There's other prayers we've prayed that haven't come to fruition yet. And I get that. But I have an expectancy that they will. And if they don't, I'm still going to be with my master one day, my crucified Savior who is risen again.

See, that's my greatest expectancy. And that is the end of all things that I have my, that's the mark that I'm setting my eyes on. But there is an expectancy. Jesus says in Luke 12, 37, once again framing up a servant, it'll be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes. Truly I tell you, he, that's Jesus, the master, will dress himself to serve.

What? Will have them, that's the servants, recline at the table and he will come wait on them. Wow. You see, when Jesus comes back, he's not looking for kings. He's not looking for servants. He's not, you know, that are not looking for him. He's looking for people that are expectant. And when he finds those that are expectant, that are waiting, watching as the prodigal father waits for a son, when he finds those, he will dress himself as a servant.

Why would God do that? The grace of Jesus. He will dress himself as a servant. He'll say, stop, stop serving. Please sit at the table just for a moment. Sup, let me serve you. Let me fill your glass to overflowing. Let me bring you a double portion. Because you have been expectant in serving me and now let me serve you. And that is the grace of God that the God of the universe would say, I want to serve you.

And more than that, you are my children. See, that's the goodness of God and that's the mentality we want to have. They're expectant. And I love verse 17. They're humble. Verse 17 says, the servant hurried to meet her and he said, please give me a little water from your jar. This servant uses the word please two times in this passage. And the one in which he most likely doesn't need to use it is with Rebecca.

You see, understand there was a patriarchy back then. It was. It existed. And it was back then in the Old Testament. And he didn't need to say please to Rebecca. But he was humble. And he was about his master's business. And his master's humble. And he was like his master who was like his master. And so he was humble and he said please. And you see that please being used twice.

Because humility is one of the core values of a servant. When we have the mentality that we want to be king or the, you know, the machismo man, you know, or the girl boss or whatever you want to be. We see ourselves in that light. It's hard to be humble. But God is calling us to be a servant. We have humility. There's this verse in Numbers 12.3.

You can mark it down. It's not in your notes. About Moses. Moses. And I love it. Because Moses, if anybody could have like flexed, it was Moses, right? Moses met with God on the mountain for 40 days. It says that Moses, God actually said this in front of people. He says, by the way, to Miriam, after Aaron and Miriam were throwing shade at Moses, God comes and says, by the way, why are you talking about my servant like this?

Which I thought was interesting. Don't talk about my servant. And that should show us we've got to be careful when we talk about God's servants and other people. That's why we don't want to do that. Because it's his servant. He says, by the way, with this servant, I talk to him as if it's face to face. And he walks by me and sees my form. He isn't like you.

You see, God calls him. And so if anybody could have flexed, it could have been Moses. You start getting some success. God starts to bless you. Your territory gets bigger. You start having more kratos, which is that Greek word of authority in the neighborhood or your influence. Your business is going amazing. You have money. Whatever it is, God has begun to bless you in all ways.

And we lose our humility. But it says this about Moses in Numbers 12, 3. Now Moses was a very humble man. More humble than anyone else on the face of the earth. That is a bad. Imagine if that was said about you. Now Moses was a very humble man. More humble than anyone else on the face of the earth. I think God likes that. And I realized this week that it's easy for me to get out of that servant mentality.

The way, you know, who's this person to walk in front of me in this line? Who's the, who am I, you know. The question is, who am I to think that? I'm just a servant. I'm just here. I want to be here to serve. And it is a complete shift of our mentality. And then the final thing I have is in verse 17. Not only are they humble, they're zealous. And that's a good word here.

They're zealous. The servant hurried, circle hurried, to meet her. Please give me a little water from your jar. Why is he hurrying? Because he's excited about his master's business. When he starts seeing people be excited and begin, God's plans come to fruition, he gets excited. I was leaving the Billy Graham event last night and they had volunteers there.

There was a volunteer that had this green jacket on and she was looking. And as we were leaving, there was all these people up in front. And she was just like, like, just like looking at people get saved. And I could tell, man, she is so joyful about her master's business. She is so happy that these people are getting saved. That's all she cared about.

You could tell. You could feel it on them. When you walk by a servant of God that is about their master's business, you will know it. I met multiple people last night and I thought to them, I saw multiple people and the people that were volunteering at that event and began to think to myself, God is on them. I can see it. And I can see God on you, many of you, as you begin to serve God.

You can see it when the Spirit is upon you. Saw it on you today, Chris. I saw the Spirit of God all over you as you sung in victory today and power. I saw it. I was like, boom. And so it's powerful. As you see that they're zealous, he hurried to meet her. If you go to verse 20, what's the hurry? What's the rush? We've been waiting for years. You're just out watering some camels.

We can figure this out over a few hour period. But in verse 20, as you talk about Rebecca here in this passage, it says, So she quickly, quickly, circled quickly, emptied her jar in the trow, ran back to the well to draw more water, and drew enough for all of his camels. I love that she's quickly about her father's business. And it's not just a few camels.

She fills it to the measure. You've got two people that are servants here. She's pretty amazing in this passage. She does some pretty amazing things. And this is where I thought we were going to go. I thought we were talking about her today. And I thought it was going to be all about Rebecca. And the Lord's like, well, she's going to get a little co-host here, but I want you to talk about this servant.

Because this is what I'm calling them to be. As we close, I realized one thing for myself this week. And God, it was a strong word to me. God said, I need you to be a servant, not an employee. There's a difference between a servant and an employee. Right? Employees expect their benefits. Employees know what their hours are. Employees, you know, have the, expect their vacation time at a certain time.

Employees have their rights. Employees have all these things. And I realized, I've just been spending way too much time seeing myself as employee. Knowing when I'm on for God. Knowing when I'm off. Me time. And I feel like God is saying, I'm not asking you to be an employee. There's benefits. But the benefit is me. And you cannot require your benefits of me.

In the California, you can require your benefits. And I guess that's the question. Are we going to keep being employees of God on our time, clocking in, clocking out? Are we going to say, here I am, send me, no matter if it's in the middle of the night, whatever it is, God. I am here for you. I'm not here to please people. I'm not telling you to be a people pleaser, servant.

That's not it. There's a lot of things God's going to say, say no to that. You need some time. You need to go away. You need to hear from me. Jesus regularly checked out, right? But that's when the master bids. And that's a difference. And so this is what God is calling us to. And the word that I really wanted to share with you, that God is looking for servants.

And there is a blessing in the servant that comes to a full measure. That has more responsibility, more territory authority, more peace. Because you live under the covering of the master, but he has given all to you. Amen? Let's stand if you would. I was excited about this message today. It's such a blessing for me. It just changes your life when you start shifting the nature of the direction of your soul towards being a servant.

And if you need prayer, Pastor Joshua and the others, the prayer team is going to come up right now. If you want to know Jesus for the first time, if you want to repent of something, if you need prayer for healing or you want to pray for somebody else, our prayer team is going to be up here. Please use them. God's servants are prayerful. Bind together with people where two or more are gathered.

It says that God, Christ is there with them. And I'm going to bless you. If you extend your hands, I want to bless you. Lord Jesus, I want to bless your people. God, we want to be servants in nature. I want to repent for not being a servant, God. For letting servanthood come on my time, looking for my benefits, my off time, my vacations. Lord, I ask forgiveness that maybe some of you with me would repent.

Say, God, we repent. We repent. We come before you in sackcloth and ash of spirit, Lord God, repenting that we have not served you. We have not said, here I am, send me, God. And so you haven't sent us. God, we want to be sent. We want to take territory for you. We want to know you, God. We want to be humble. In any of these places, God, if we can take a measure of any of these characteristics of a servant, God, we want to lay before you where we have failed, God, and know that your grace will set us free.

God, now, would you fully laden your people? Would you give them that 10 camel life that is just filled with all, every good thing, God, from the peace of God to whatever it is, Lord Jesus. We bless you. I want to bless you now as servant kings in Christ and the children of God. And I send you out now to change the world. In the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit, amen.

We love you. We'll see you next week. God bless, guys. God bless.
