Keep them, even those who are graduating from college, O Lord God, be with them, O Lord God. As you use them in mighty ways, O Heavenly Father. We thank you so much for what you're doing in this church. And we pray that you continue, Lord God. Let us seek your face daily. For us in Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Amen. The book of Acts, chapter 3, verses 11 through 21.
While the beggar held on to Peter and John, all the people were astonished and came running to them in the place called Solomon's Colonnade. When Peter saw this, he said to them, Men of Israel, why does this surprise you? Why do you stare at us as if by our own power or godliness we had made this man walk? The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified his servant Jesus.
You handed him over to be killed, and you disowned him before Pilate, though he had decided to let him go. You disowned the Holy and Righteous One and asked that a murderer be released to you. You killed the author of life, but God raised him from the dead. We are witnesses of this. By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong.
It is Jesus' name and the faith that comes through him that has given this complete healing to him, as you can all see. Now, brothers, I know that you acted in ignorance, as did your leaders. But this is how God fulfilled what he had foretold through all the prophets, saying that his Christ would suffer. Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord, and that he may send the Christ who has been appointed for you, even Jesus.
He must remain in heaven until the time comes for God to restore everything, as he promised long ago through his holy prophets. This is the word of the Lord. This is the word of the Lord. Don't let it get around. Beautiful day. Right on. Welcome to church. If you've got your Bibles, open up to Acts chapter 3, 11 through 21. You'll notice, I don't know if he mentioned this time the sermon title, Denial is Not Just a River in Israel.
So, I didn't get that much last first service either, and it was a risk to go for it second. So, why did I go for it again? I don't know. Yeah, usually in Egypt, nonetheless. There's a key word I want you to write at the top of your notes. The word is deny. Usually seen as a pejorative term. In this, it can be a real positive term, depending on what we deny.
And the main point today is what you deny often chooses your course. We tend to see the things that we choose, we choose our course, right? The things that we're proactive in. We see denial happening here. The word denial is used twice when speaking to the Jewish leaders. It really does set them on a course. I want to talk about, you know, denying and mostly just how do we deny ourselves.
And so, oftentimes, the things that we deny, we say no to. That's another word. You can write that at the top. No. No is a really powerful word, especially when used strategically in your life. And so, we see that here, and we see this word. We're going to get into the verses 13 and 14 where he talks about denying or disowning Jesus. Now, if you remember the story, we're in this story for a few weeks now.
We're in the book of Acts. And Peter and John have just healed a man in Solomon's portico. Now, there's a picture here of Solomon's portico. This man was a beggar. He was a lame one is what the Greek word said. And he'd been lame since birth, and people had been carrying him for his entire life. And setting him outside here of Solomon's porch. Now, he could not go out.
He would be at the outside of the temple. There is the eastern gate. That's the one that Jesus is supposed to come through. It's currently blocked off. They've walled it off, so I guess he's not going to be able to make it through, according to the walled off. We'll see. And then you see Solomon's porch is in the middle. This is where the sacrifices were done.
This was a sacrificial area where this miracle took place. And then those columns, that's the colonnade or the portico, or the colonnade is there. The portico is in the middle, Solomon's porch. This is a really interesting place. And if you want to do a deep dive, I did it a little bit earlier this week. I look at Solomon. You can see that picture up there.
I looked at Solomon's colonnade, porch, portico. It's mentioned 42 times in the Old Testament. It is a place of restoration. It is a place of glory. It is a place that David came up with in his mind, and he challenged his son to actually build that area. You would learn that there was two bronze columns as you walk in, one called the Column of Boaz, one of Jachin.
Jachin was a priest under David. Boaz, the husband of Ruth, related to King David. Whole bunch of interesting stuff. But what is more interesting is kind of the progression you see of this place in the New Testament. The New Testament, and I got a copyright, Elliot, on this. Elliot's one of our Bible teachers. He sent me a really interesting stuff.
This is not in your notes, but I want you to write it down. You see an upswell of revival in this place. And it has to do with repentance. Now, in that verse, he's telling them, remember, repent so that times of refreshing will come. And that's kind of the take-home for you. What do we need to do to have times of refreshing come to our own hearts, to our church, to our city, to our nation?
How do we see those things happening? And that's really what I want to lay out before you today is put you in a place where you can receive times of refreshing. I feel like there's so many of us here that needs refreshing for our souls, like it speaks about in Proverbs. And if you need that, there's going to be a little bit of a way to do it, an algorithm of how that happens.
But I want you to write some verses down. You can do this, some study after the service, about Solomon's portico. Now, this is what Elliot sent me. The first thing we see is Jesus was in this portico. In John 10, we see Jesus hanging out in the colonnade, actually, underneath all the columns there. And it's in John 10. I'm going to read you the scripture out of John 10.
And it says this, then came the festival of dedication at Jerusalem. It was winter. And Jesus was in the temple courts walking in Solomon's colony. Now, he went there early in the morning, and it was winter. And John is an incredible author. He never says anything without a reason. He's talking about dark. Remember, we just got out of the book of John.
He talks about dark. He talks about light. And here he mentions that it's winter. Israel was in a time of winter. It had been 400 years since the Old Testament prophecies had closed in the book of Malachi. If you go all the way to the Old Testament at the very end, you have the book of Malachi. That is the last prophet for 400 years. This colonnade, this place where Jesus was walking in the winter on a cold, early winter morning, was a place that is probably about 1,000 years old.
It had been built by Solomon at the time. Don't quote me exactly on the timeline there, but it was old, and it was ancient. And Jesus was there. But the thing is that what Elliot saw was that he was walking by himself. Now, the next time we see this in Scripture is in this passage, Acts chapter 3. Acts chapter 3, as you know, at the beginning we read it last week, now we have two apostles that are there.
We have Peter and John. Now, if you caught me last week, I did say Paul numerous times. I said Paul and John. And it's easy to get that wrong. But nonetheless, it was Peter and John. And now Peter is speaking to the Jewish leaders about what happened. That's what's happened. He's giving a testimony of what happened. What is interesting, you have Jesus alone in the winter, early in the morning.
Now you have two apostles that have come, and they've had one healing. Two chapters from now, the times of refreshing are going to start happening. In two chapters, Acts 5, you can go to this on your own, write down Acts 5. I'm going to read this for you. The apostles performed many signs and wonders among the people. And the believers used to meet together regularly at Solomon's colonnade.
So we see that happening. Now it's not just one miracle happening. There seems to be a bit of a momentum. The tidal shift. There's a flow. The ebb is done, and the flow has come. And all of a sudden, it says that many signs and wonders are happening. No one else dared join them, though they were highly regarded by the people. Nevertheless, more and more men and women believed in the Lord, and the Lord added to their number.
As a result, people brought the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and mats so that at least Peter's shadow might fall on some of them as they passed by. Crowds gathered from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those tormented by impure spirits. All of them were healed. Key word there. Some of them were healed. All. All of them.
Now if you know this story in Acts chapter 3, it says that this man was healed, and he wasn't partially healed. He was completely healed is what the word said. Somebody spoke to me this week, and they had a healing, but there was still some chance that there might be some repercussions from the surgery. And I said, you know, I just want to claim this verse over you, that Paul, excuse me, Peter and John, when they healed this man, he was completely healed.
Jesus wants your complete restoration for your marriage, for your relationships, for your heart, for your soul. He doesn't want, you know, a half of a healing. He wants an entire healing, a complete healing, and we want to continue to go for that and do the things necessary sometimes to see that happen as we continue to do that. So Solomon's colonnade, that's the setting of where we are.
Now go to verse 13 and 14. We're going to dive into the scripture. This is when he's giving this testimony. Now the man's been healed. There's been a sign, and Peter's speaking. Now he's testifying as to the sign. I want to encourage you that when God does something in your life, testify to it. When you see God move, testify to it. What they are really good at, and which is a spiritual maturity quality for disciples of Jesus, is being able to blend your story in with the gospel story of Jesus.
He says, hey, we've done this. We've healed this man. These things happen. Now Jesus did this. Jesus did that. Jesus did this. Now you'll see Stephen do the exact same thing in a few chapters before he's martyred. He tells the story, and then all of a sudden he tells the whole history. We're not going to get to that in this series of what it is. But once again, a testimony is happening.
So he says in verse 13 and 14, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified his servant. But you handed him over to be killed, and you disowned. Circle disowned. We're going to break down that word. You disowned him before Pilate, though he had decided to let him go. You disowned the holy and righteous one and asked that a murderer be released to you.
Now there's a lot going on in that passage. He mentions disavowal twice. He mentions the denial, the disowning. What is rich? Let me tell you what's rich about this passage. If anybody is going to speak about denial, it probably shouldn't be Peter, right? Peter is up there talking about you denied Christ two times. But Peter understood denial. He understood intimately what it means to turn away from his Lord Jesus Christ.
What is interesting how Jesus restored him back. And I think if there's anything, I mean, it's easy to miss this, right, in this passage. You're seeing a man who's been healed. You're seeing Solomon's colonnade and all of the history. There's all these things happening. And in the subtext, we see a man who had called curses down upon himself to claim that he did not know Jesus Christ.
Being restored to the place where he stands up before those people and says, repent, repent, so that times of refreshing will come. This is a powerful story that's happening in the midst of this. And what it says to us as people, if you feel like you're somebody that, you know, you've denied one too many times. You've turned away just one too many times.
God's through with you. You're going to get to heaven one day and he's going to say, all your sins are forgiven under the blood except for 1984. That was a rough year for you and we just can't forgive that one, you know, or whatever that thing is that you have. Peter has been completely restored. He's completely restored. And he now is sharing this story.
And so that is really powerful. I put in this idea of disode, we're going to look at the Greek word or neomai. But I wrote that denial is often perceived as a passive action because it involves rejecting or refusing something that can seem like a form of inaction. However, denial is actually a very active and deliberate process. Peter's denying Jesus.
And he's very active about it. He's telling the servant girl, you know, I never knew him. Call curses down to myself. If I knew him, whatever. It's very active. I'm assuming that the majority of you haven't done that or won't ever do that in your life. But are there ways in which we deny the things that Jesus has offered to us? This word denial, our neomai, has this meaning of something is being offered to you and you're refusing what is being offered.
It isn't like it's just something that's there. It isn't, oh, you know, you see it and it's not being offered to you, but you're just going to refuse it as you walk by. It is something that is being handed to you. And what Peter is saying by using our neomai is Jesus Christ has been given to you. He has been given to the Jewish people. And the Jewish leaders have rejected that which is given to them.
Now, before you put too much shade on the Israelites, know that the gospel goes first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. And these followers who followed Jesus were Jews. The Jews followed him first and there was a great amount of Jews. And Christianity exists today because of the Jews who brought and followed Jesus and brought it to us. I have to tell you, I am a goyim is the word that the Jews use, and it means a Gentile.
So I am a goyim. So if you're a goyim and you're in Israel and they don't work on the Sabbath, they can hire the goyims to carry their bags and do stuff like that. So I could be a goyim in Israel, so you know what that is. That word are neomai means not to accept, to reject, refuse something that is offered. Now, in verse 13, go to verse 13. He says in verse 13, The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified his servant Jesus, but you handed him over to be killed, and you disowned, that's the word, rejected him, what was being offered, before Pilate, though he had decided to let him go.
Now, this was a legal denial. As you remember, the first four chapters of John are set up like a courtroom, and we spoke through that, I can't go through it now, but you can go back to Spotify, YouTube, and watch those sermon series. And I said that a testimony is not a God story. A testimony is something that is legally binding, that you could be convicted of in court on earth or in heaven.
A testimony will convict you for following Jesus. It is something that you say, I follow Jesus. And you're going to see what Peter makes no bones about it, that he is a follower of Jesus, and at this point, as he showed in his life, he was willing to be and was martyred for that testimony. The Jewish leaders here are legally disavowing Jesus in a legal courtroom setting with Pilate.
That's key. Now, heaven is set up in a judicial way. There is grace, and mercy triumphs over judgment, but the things that we deny and the things that we choose open up doorways in heaven for blessing, or sometimes we choose things and we accept curses for things. We choose death, and we see that here in just a moment. We'll see that. So it was disavowed legally.
Number 14, he says, then, what did they lose? You disowned the holy and righteous one. When we choose not to accept the things that God offers us, we step away from holiness. Put that, if you would, that temple picture up there again, please, Alan. In there is the Holy of Holies right there in that place. And on the backside of it, on the far side of the picture, is the western wall.
The Holy of Holies is right there. And there's a place you can go underground in Israel. You can go down, you can go within 10 feet of where the Holy of Holies was, and you can put your hands on this rock and you're 10 feet away. Now, the Muslims own that whole part, but you can touch and hold that. What he is saying, and imagine that there, is rather than go into the Holy of Holies, which now we can.
Actually, the Bible says you have become the Ark of the Covenant. We have become the temple. So the New Testament understanding is right there in the middle, that tall building, that's you. And it means that Jesus, because of the blood of Jesus, now he lives within us, and the Holy of Holies is within you. That's the gospel. That he enters into us, and he tabernacles with us, is the way that it is said.
What he is saying to the Jewish leaders here, and what we often do in our own lives, is when we choose or we deny what he is offering, he's offering love, joy, forgiveness, he's constantly offering these things to us. The riches of his kingdom are being offered to you. When you deny them, you step away from holiness. When you deny them, you step away from righteousness.
And as you step away, you lose the blessings that come in the train of its rope. Imagine a bride at a wedding with all of her bridesmaids. Holiness is like that. When holiness comes into your life, it has the bridesmaids of peace, of power, of forgiveness, of purity. When we accept the things that are freely given, scriptures, if you look up the word free or freely in the scripture, it's gonna say that God is just freely offering things to us.
But like he said, oftentimes in our own lives, what do we do? We deny, we reject, we are neomai, that's the Greek word there. We disown, we step away from those things, and we choose a course by refusing one. And that was the key thing that we saw there. And then he says in verse 15, you killed the author of life. Now we know that no one killed Jesus, right?
Jesus gave up his spirit, and he said, no one takes my life from me. But I think in regard to the story, they did crucify him and try to kill him, but Jesus gave up his life. But he is the author of life. Now one of the things that's interesting here is when we follow Jesus, he gives life. And we are living in a world that is continuing to reject the things of Christ more and more, and they're reaping death for it.
You look at the suicidality rates, you look at all the death that is happening. The more you choose the things of the world and reject the things of Christ, the more you're gonna see the results of death there in the world. And so we see that happening in that passage. Now what was interesting is when he talks about this life, this author of life, Jesus then speaks about this same word, using the same word denial.
If you go to Matthew 10, 33, he says, but whoever disowns, that's the same word there, or Naomi, me before others, I will disown him before my father in heaven. That was a story. I was in college, and I had a friend named Boogie. His name was Boogie. The bodybuilder, it's a cool name. And so, cooler if his last name was Knights, that'd be funny. And he came, he was my RA, and I had just gotten to college.
I'd been there about two weeks, and I was trying to be sober. I'd been sober two weeks. I got sober the day I started Point Loma Nazarene. I've told that story multiple times. And I was two weeks in, but I was still around the fringes of the parties. I was going to the parties. I wasn't smoking weed. I wasn't drinking. I was completely sober, but I was white-knuckling it, okay?
Fully white-knuckling it. And I'd go skate with this group of surfers, and I was really into being in the cool crowd of surfers. I had just gotten back from Bali. I was the only surfer at Loma that had ever been to Indonesia at that point. And I kind of had a little rep. I still had cigarettes from Indo, and I was giving out Indonesian cigarettes.
It was super cool. Like, I was so cool, right? And I get there, and, you know, they're smoking weed all the time when I'm hanging out with them. So I go to my, I've been going to Bible studies, trying to get sober, and I go to my RA, and his name's Boogie. And I go to Boogie, and Boogie's intense, right? He's super intense. And follows Jesus, just hardcore.
And I went up to him, and I said, look, I'm trying to get sober. These guys are smoking dope, and I just don't want to smoke dope with them. And can you just hold me accountable? And he's like, I gotta turn them in. I'm like, that's not where I was going with this, bro. No, no, no. We're not going with, I gotta turn them in. And they were from PV. So if you know Palos Verdes, that's a super heavy crew.
If you know that, you know, you read about them in the newspaper all the time, beating people up. And I'm like, dude, I'm not gonna cop to that. I'm not gonna stand up for that. And he goes, and he says, I thought you told me you wanted to be like Paul. And now, at the time, I didn't know who Paul was. I did say that. I'm taking it back. I don't want to be like Paul.
I don't need to be stoned and brought back to life. But I said to him, he goes, I thought you wanted to be like Paul. I said, I did. He goes, well, then, and now, I would never say this to you, and it's pretty hardcore. It did change my life, and I'm not sure I'd be here today if he wouldn't have said this to me, but I don't recommend it, okay? So this is a trigger warning, all right?
So, not that I ever give a trigger warning in my life before, but he said to me, this is your opportunity to follow Jesus once and for all or to spit in his face and turn your back on him and walk away again. That's what he said to me. I was like, oh, that's so heavy, dude. And I was like, oh. So I went, and I spent a really restless, sleepless night thinking about it.
I mean, all my identity was tied up in being like cool Indo boy, you know, that went to Indonesia, and I went back to him, and I said, okay, I'll do it. And I came back down from my classes the next day, and I see these guys sitting out in front of the principal's office, and they're like, not principal, the guy, the RC, and they're like daggers at me, dude.
I gotta say, that began a year of rejection and, I wouldn't say bullying, but yeah, a year where my entire, everything changed for me. They were putting notes around campus, they were putting things in my bed, they were scratching my car. It was gnarly. It was so gnarly. In that time, the only place that would accept me and didn't mess with me were the Bible studies, so I just dove into Bible studies and like became a full Christian.
It was the best thing that ever happened to me, but it was horrible. I'd go out in the water, and people would burn me in the water. All my identity, it was in that moment. There was a moment for me where it was so crucial where I said, and look, it wasn't what Peter was doing. Maybe Boogie was over the top. Maybe it wasn't spitting in Jesus' face or whatever, but whatever it was, it was a moment of demarcation in my life where I'm like, I'll pay the price.
Whatever it costs, I'll go there. And I'm not willing to deny over and over again. There's been little mini denials in this whole thing, but that moment changed everything for me. This is what Paul says here at the end. You want to look about the solution. The solution, go to verse 19 and 20. Repent then and turn to God so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from whom?
The Lord, and that he may send the Christ who has been appointed for you, even Jesus. I love this. Paul is speaking about the hastening of the day of the Lord. He's speaking about the second coming. I will say that that can be used, that times of refreshing can also work in our own lives. I think that also works, but if you're gonna exegete it properly, he's talking about Jesus coming back, but God can bring times of refreshing through this.
I wrote in the notes, repentance is denial in its purest form. Repentance, you are denying yourself, you're denying the things you want, you're denying all the things that hold you back, and we often see denial as pejorative because you're denying something, but when we're denying ourself, it is repentance is denial in its purest form, and we are called to do that.
Jesus says in Matthew 16, then Jesus said to his disciples, if anybody else would come after me, he must deny himself, take up his cross and follow me, for whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it. Galatians 5, 24, now to those who belong to Christ, Jesus, they have crucified the flesh with its passions and its desires.
If you want an algorithm for times of refreshing, it comes in repentance. It comes in that moment to say, now is the moment for me, I'm willing to face the consequences whatever they are. A couple practical takeaways, and we're done. One, I think no is in a powerful word that can become a gate of protection for you. If you're struggling with temptation, the best thing to do is as soon as you get a thought, just say no.
If you start dancing with the temptation, the dopamine starts rolling in your brain, you start thinking about it. If you just do a couple dance moves, it's hard. It's hard to continue to go on. No is a gateway. Like I said last week, God's not looking for your willpower, he's looking for your willingness. It's a big difference between willpower. You don't have enough power on your own to do it.
Let me just, spoiler alert, you don't have enough power to do the thing you want to do. You need Jesus to do that. He will come and he will save us from that. Let no be a gate of protection. Repent, number two, is repent and be refreshed. Spend time in repentance. Sit before the Lord. God, where can I give you my life? Psalm 19, the only time that they use the word refreshing in the Old Testament.
Psalm 19, 7, the law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul. That word refreshing means like taking a cool drink. It means an upwelling of a cool water is what that word means in the Hebrew. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making the wise simple. It's interesting, between the service, I haven't told a Boogie story. Boogie was one of my best friends all through college and just, we worked together, we traveled Europe together, surfed through France together, got a little janky car and drove for three months through Europe together and just surfed and hung out.
I haven't told a Boogie story for 10 years. I haven't talked to Boogie for probably seven years. after the service, after I shared that message, I got a text from our best friend that he's in hospice and he's gonna pass away within 48 hours. And I was like, far out. So heavy. That dude made a difference and still trying to process it but God's in it in some way.
Maybe that's you, maybe you need a Boogie in your life or maybe that's you but I just wanna honor what he did in my life. It's super powerful. I wanna invite you, stand up if you would. We're gonna have our prayer team come forward. If you need refreshing, we wanna invite you to come forward. We kinda cracked the door last week. We had 40 to 60 people come forward last week and ask for prayer to be prayed for, to be cared for.
If you want prayer today, our team's gonna be on both sides here. We wanna pray for you. These people want to pray for you. We wanna see freedom. Some of you guys can come to this side. Some of you team come to this side. Chris is gonna lead us in this song. Just come forward. If you need repentance, if you just wanna sit in the presence of the Lord, you can just come up and sit in the front row.
Chris is gonna sing a while. We're gonna, I feel like the Lord started moving. We wanna see that progression. Jesus alone in the winter, one healing, all of them were healed. That's what we want. Open it up. Please feel free to come forward and then I'll come back and close the service after a couple moments. So I throw up my hands and praise you again and again.
And again. Cause all that I have is a hallelujah. Hallelujah. And I know it's not much, but I'm nothing else fit for a king except for a heart singing hallelujah. Hallelujah. So I throw up my hands and praise you again and again. Cause all that I have is a hallelujah. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. And I know it's not much, but I'm nothing else fit for a king except for a heart singing.
And hallelujah. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. I feel like there's some people that need some healing and a refreshing in their marriage. If that's so, Pastor Joshua would love to pray for you. I feel like he just wants to pray for that for you. If you need healing in your body, times of refreshing your soul, anxiety, don't pass up those moments. So I'm gonna ask you to extend your hands.
We're gonna pray for Joe as well today. Joe's heading out down to the Central America for his kids. We got some pictures we're gonna throw up there. And I'm just gonna pray for Joe first and I'm gonna bless you and we'll finish the service. Lord, I just wanna thank you for Joe and his faithfulness, God. And the ultimate faithfulness, he's a faithful one, Lord Jesus.
And he would die for the kids that you've given him. And we thank you for his faithfulness and his love and his joy. We thank you for what he brings to our team. We send him away, God, on this trip to come back, refresh, pray for a time of refreshing. That this would be so refreshing, God. And he just, it's like that word that just wells up with him. So we bless Joe.
Thank you for blessing his ministry. Well done, good and faithful servant. And we send him out, Lord God, to change the world. And now for the congregation, Lord Jesus, you extend your hands. Lord, I wanna bless my people. God, you have given me to shepherd over them and I wanna bless you. I wanna bless you that you would follow him more richly and deeply and bless the top of your head to the bottom of your feet.
Bless your hands. Bless your health. Bless your family. Just pray against. We just bind anxiety. We bind sickness. We bind divorce. We bind depression, Lord. Bind cancer, Jesus. God, we ask, God, that you would bless these homes and that you would just let this be like, give us the blessing that was on Solomon's portico and colonnade that everyone would be completely healed, Lord Jesus.
Completely healed. We claim that now. We send you out now as an army of God's consolation and love. In the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen. We love you guys. God bless you. If you need prayer, we're going to be here. Come forward. You want to be prayed for. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen.
